Ignition Timing

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, im just getting my newly purchased 205 setup properly & i was wondering what is the quoted advance for the dizzy on the 1.6 Gti? Ideally id like to know the reccomended idle value in degrees & full advance at high rpm. Also while im asking, does anyone have any advice regarding petrol octane for the 205. Is there much benefit from advancing the dizzy a little more and using 99 octane instead of 95 or is the engine not tuned enough to make it worth while? Jst FYI I run my other car - a 1275cc mini with 10.5:1 compression ratio and high lift cam on 99 octane and more advanced timing which it definately does benefit from, gets better mpg and has a bit more power, especially low down the rev range.

Cheers all,

Andrew.

Hi Andrew

It was 5 deg. @ idle and 30 deg. @ 3000 rmp (vacuum capsule pipe disconnected during the adjusting) ... But , id recommend to denote the factory specs ..

Thing is , each engine will need a few deg. different specs especially today when this cars are , lets face it - old ... so std. specs wont do anymore .. mainly because the wear and tear built up inside the engine internals and engine management sensors after all this years and + the fuel grade and it's chemical components has changed during the years since the 205 was launched off the production line ..

Really it'll be best to run it on 98 grade fuel and adjust the ignition timing manually "by ear" (tweak the dizzy up to the point where it starts to pink under load and back off a few mm's from that point ..) .. it'll run better adjusted like that and will have better fuel consumption ..

Cheers guys, sound advice! I was just looking for the quoted factory figures as a rough guide which i can work from there. The engine was rebuilt in 2009, previous owner even gave me all reciepts and invoices for the work & it has only covered 13k miles since so it should be in good condition. Anyway ill start with the quoted figures using shell V power petrol and work my way up from there to see what i can get out of it :)

Thanks again for the replies, much appreciated
