I hit a lorry head on, both of us going approx 50mph, and I survived. So not as bad as you might think in the real world

Thats a closing speed of 100mph........head on??

I've seen similar incidents where the car generally ends up very flat underneath the lorry!!!!....the chances of walking away are very very slim.

needless to say I didnt get in a car for a year after that due to post traumatic stress, and still have nightmares frequently 2 and a half years later.

and to add insult to injury it'd just had a new mot it the week before!!

I guess part of what is great about the 205 is that it's so lightweight and thus nippy but you just don't want to hit anything at any real speed....especially a volvo!!!

yeh, you are very lucky mate. The chances of surviving a high speed collision are slim anyway but in any car built before mid 2000's even slimmer.

This picture is more realistic for a high(ish) speed collision. Assuming both cars were doing about 30mph at speed of impact (thats after drivers have slammed on the brakes)

Not for the feint hearted...

Bent 309

These cars weren't designed to withstand high speed collisions, there are no safety features on a 205 other than seat belts. And they are going to be pretty useless if the engine is trying to get into the passenger compartment with you. The energy from the crash needs to go somewhere and with old cars it tends to be the passenger cell which gets crushed.

I think side impacts are a worry on a lot of cars, even ones with rollcages and side impact bars as was the case of that very nasty rally accident in wales a few years ago when Miicheal Park was killed. :)

Surely the most inappropriate use of a smiley ever!

I just realised it wasn't a fair test atall as the volvo is a tank

The Volvo has a tow bar and the 205 is rusty which doesn't seem that scientific really. It's realistic I accept but its not a repeatable test.

Exactly, it wasn't a true head on. Johnnyboy said that he richocheted off the lorry and spun around, hitting vehicles behind the lorry, so that shows it wasn't a head on in the true sense. The impact only absorbed a fraction of the total energy, so a very lucky escape there. And therein lies the crux of the issue - every impact will be different because it is so dependant on the exact positioning and angle of impact. A broad analogy would be comparing one person being punched in the face and coming away with a black eye, whilst another person might fall to the ground hitting their skull on the pavement and dieing as a result.

no both vehicles only have a 50mph impact force :)

Some truly nasty crashes on here!

One i remember seeing was wardy18's off here (hope he doesn't mind the photo nicking):

8-1.jpg

Seem to remember it being a granite wall at around 90ish being the cause, god knows what it would have been like without the cage.

He should have gone to spec savers

Wow some serious 205 crashes so far :o the last one is an awesome crashed 205 in the place and way its been hit, lucky driver's for sure.

The lorry smashes are the one reason why i always try to look whats behind me, i try to leave a big space in front just in case, seen too many 205 rear smashes go badly.

Did anyone see the Ford Focus 120mph crash on fifth gear? I can only imagine how flat the 205 would have been.

http://fwd.channel5.com/fifth-gear/videos/features/120mph-mega-crash

Anything more than 40mph into an immovable object or another one doing the same speed head on and you've mangled your legs if nothing else I recon.

As for that rear impact, it doesn't bare thinking about putting kids in the back.

I am a recent father and seeing that made me feel sick.

They are not made for crashing

Even modern cars with a 5* NCAP rating are at best marginal at anything faster. There is an ADAC video on youtube (The German automotive testing\recovery\crash testing etc people) who crashed a top scoring NCAP car at 80km/h instead of the standard NCAP speed and it's not good. All other factors in the test are the same as NCAP, same offset, same type of deformable barrier etc etc. Have a search (I would post the link, but Im at work ;) )
