Have a look at this and remember this was a new from factory car. How do you think your 20 odd year old piece of French tin would do now. With out causing offence to anyone it does not matter what colour it is or what motor is in it , was all the underseal stripped off and the body acid dipped. Also has it got nice rad lowering brackets, a flat floor, power steering and all the rest at the end of the day its still based on this ! Well thought out car would you say?

Your opinions please !

I hit a lorry head on, both of us going approx 50mph, and I survived. So not as bad as you might think in the real world

Pah.

Three door models, particularly in GTi trim, are on par with a Hummer

Fact

Edit, unless it has a sunroof.

That's why I don't plan on ever crashing one.

what do you expect, people didn't really pay any attention to car crash worthy-ness in Europe until EUROncap took effect in 1996 and 205 development started in the late 70's. Anyway, the lack of safety features keeps the weight and simplicity down and is a key contributor to the cars excellent handling etc.

meh. I survived 60mph sideways into a ditch despite headbutting the dash. Looks like as long as we dont drive into a lamppost or tree we are ok..

Mm, my girlfiiend was looking at my 205 with the bumpers off the other day and asking what went infront of the radiator hole in the bodywork structure to act as the crash protection..

Still, doing over 40mph into a pretty serious steel post is a fairly unlikely accident, and even the NCAP tests these days uses a 'deformable barrier' at a slightly lower speed than the video above, so its not an entirely fair comparison to more modern crash videos.

It makes me a better driver because I know if I ditch the pug it's going to hurt. I think you can become complacent when driving big modern 4x4's for example.

I guess the fact that they fold like in that video, is also what makes them so great to drive, it's what makes the light and nimble. You can't have it all. :)

its a deformable block sat at an angle as well, it isn't head on like the old 80's tests. The thing that would worry me more than head on collisions is a side impact

That looks a bit on the painful side, though not as bad as the video above may have us think...

Walked away with whip lash & a small cut of my knee where the center console split. I was very lucky.....

But considering the speed and the way I hit the lorry (it pulled stright out on a cross road, my right of way) I think the 205 stood up pretty well.

Does rust offer better or worse crash protection than fresh steel? Perhaps if there's no metal there in the first place then there's nothing to crush you if you have an accident!

In a slightly morbid way I wish I did! I didnt get to the salvage yard to see it before it was crushed unfortunately. Although my girlfriend at the time did go to see it and broke down in tears, and the guy at the yard offered his condolences because he thought I had died.

I hit the lorry head on, then spun round and took out a transit van which was behind the lorry, then spun behind the transit and was hit by two cars following the van.

Just to put a bit of perspective on it; my right arm went through the window up to the shoulder, my left leg ended up on the passenger seat my right foot was trapped by the wheel arch (which ended up by the centre console) the front right wheel (what was left of it) was where the wing mirror should be, as far as I know this was the only wheel still attached. I broke my foot trying to get out of the car, but neither door would open. The fire service cut the roof off to get me out and put me on a stretcher with neck brace so I wasnt able to see the full extent of the damage.

I had reconstructive surgery on my elbow (have a gnarly scar now) and had crutches due to the broken foot.

I'll try and find a photo of my elbow when it came out of the cast later

I rolled one when i was doing a road rally and was lucky it had a roll cage. The car was well and truely bent even the doors would not shut. Glad i did'nt drive into a post or a tree.

This was a near head on at well in excess of 50, probably more like 70, but with a roll cage keeping the passenger compartment intact. The front has still crumpled totally which absorbed some of the impact, the shell was pretty much standard from the bulkhead forward. The carbon bonnet popped off the pins and was pretty much intact apart from some scuffing!

I hate to think what that fuel filter would have caused if the crash had been the other side.

Side impacts worry me more, although Rich (those that have been on this forum for far too long will remember him as Fuqa) walked away from this and didn't even have to pay for the lamp post as it had already been hit by someone else the week before!

I think side impacts are a worry on a lot of cars, even ones with rollcages and side impact bars as was the case of that very nasty rally accident in wales a few years ago when Miicheal Park was killed. :)

That first vid is not a great example though - it's some sort of narrow post square in the middle of the car, so missing the forward 'crumple' zones entirely (the chassis legs, if you like) and just passing straight into the engine bay area, so it will naturally push that lovely lump of engine block straight into the passenger compartment.

Some scary pictures.

Johnnyboy666 it sounds painful what you describe.

The most worrying thing is someone else crashing you especially side impact as you guys say.
