I have used the Ebay ones before, for the money I don't think you can go far wrong. I fitted one to a car that had an intact looking rad but would not stay cool, even with new water pump and thermostat. I removed the rad to find it silted up to death and could not clear it enough to get the car to run cool. Fitted a new Ebay rad and it stayed lovely and cool afterwards. Can't comment on longevity, but as above, for £40 if it only lasts 5 years it is not the end of the world. My factors quoted me something ridiculous like £120.

I got a £40 ebay rad 4-5 years ago and it's been faultless.

All the replacement radiators are alloy (the original is copper), so don't pay a premium for one.

Do you mean the full alloy one? With alloy side tanks etc?

I've been looking at large radiators, only problem I can see is your struggle to get it in surely? with a 6' engine.

Mine is ridiculously tight, they seem to be a tad wider than they should.

Hi wes205mi,

Sorry to hijack this thread but I just saw this post and was wondering which radiator you went for in the end?, I have an STDT, which is desperate for a new radiator, and have been looking at the thicker alloy rads on ebay,

I know that the diesel turbo 205s seem to get a bit hotter than the GTi's, and as a result have a thicker rad core from standard so I don't think even the fully alloy GTi rad will be good enough.

I'm literally about to buy this item, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140693009760?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 which has the thicker 50mm core.

Its about twice the price of a standard Dturbo rad at £149 and just wondering if I'm about to waste £75 that i don't really have anyway,

Cheers,

Rob

standard turbo diesel rad would be around that much, not £75 like a gti /diesel rad.

not so long ago diesel/gti rads were £40 and turbo rads £100.

Thanks for the reply, fair point, the cheapest I can find a standard item is about £107 after a quick search and that probablly doesnt include p+p,

So I guess the question is, if the radiator I linked on ebay will be sufficient for an STDT, or should I just get the standard unit?

I'm not really bothered about the 'shiny' effect, just want my engine to stay cool and not leak out all the coolant once a week!

Thanks again!

i went for the full alloy one from ebay in the end:

as bought from here: http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1497.l2649

it is slightly wider and slightly shorter than the old one but fits ok as there is quite a bit of adjustment on the fan cowling.

its about the same thickness as the old one and there is plenty of space between the rad and the inlet mani on my gti6 engine, not sure a thicker one would fit though. overall i'm happy with it and it keeps the engine cooler than the old one and its a lot lighter.

Hmm, It does look nice :)

I think I might just order the thicker one and give it a try I can't really see it making the situation any worse and if it doesn't keep the XUD7 cool enough then I can just sell it on to someone else I suppose.

At least it should solve my leak problem!

Did you fit it with the original fan or did you put a slim line fan on? I'm thinking of getting two 10" slim lines to keep it cool as I'm hoping to squeeze in an FMIC at somepoint and want it to fit under the original bumper as best as possible.
