does anyone know how to trace a cars past? things like the original supplying dealer. i know if i send a form to the dvla for a fee they can disclose previous owner details and i have a hpi certificate showing its all clear of any finance lol and not insurance recorded and i already have a pretty good service history for my car and know the names of some of the previous owners because of the service documents i have. in addition i have every mot certificate for my car from the 1st at 3 years old to the 1 it has just passed! but i really would like to know where it was sold ( supplied by ) so i can have authentic number plates made up and also would be good to know the date it was ordered and collected by the 1st owner. also does anyone know what secrets its vin number would tell me and is there anywhere at peugeot or other source i could find out those details?

many thanks for reading and i look forward to useful input

You can look at the Reg number to see what city/town it came from and see what dealer is there, Rarely more than 1 serves that town but most now have been taken over by large groups

Need to do this with mine. Has a personalised plate so no idea where it came from. The dvla will tell you a fair bit, but you have to make it crystal clear exactly what you want to know a they will only tell you what you ask specifically. If you want to know the previous keepers addresses you have to ask that rather than just ' can I have as much detail as possible please'

Hi mate.

I think your car was one I viewed in Sheffield with my mate - he decided not not to buy it - was it a doctor's car? I may be totally wrong here, so sorry if I am!

I have the original national dealer book and can trace a local dealer if you know the rough location (1st MOT may be helpful here, if the owner was the same person).

Jonnygoodhand on here can make up plates and dealer stickers if/when you get the info on the dealer. I hope this helps.

Is this for a car you already own, or a car you're prospectively purchasing.

if the latter - take someone who knows 205's with you, someone who can spot knocking driveshafts, rumbling wheel bearings, knackered wishbone bushes, if it idles / pulls like it should, stops correctly.. that will give you the best indication if it's going to require an excessive outlay of money to keep going.

additoinally, if the seller will let you, perhaps compression test it, and do all of the other second hand car checks you care to.

If it's your car (already purchased) it's a bit late to go poring over the dealer history, and anything from the main dealer will be mostly irrelevant in terms of educating you on when an item is reaching the end of it's serviceable life.

205's are generally sold on their owners reputation / history available on the forum / recipts / on observation.

Unless we're talking about a concourse thing.

sorry if this comes across as a bit negative, i just don't quite understand why you're doing this.

Cheers

J

I have done this and got reprints of services etc, but chances are that the data is no longer retrieveable from systems after computer changes / purges etc but I was lucky as I had the original dealer details.

He bought another one on ebay that had loads if recent work completed as he thought the red one (yours) needed too much body correction - he is a bit picky!

It's a small world eh?

See if you and the GTI can come along to the next Lancs meet we used to have 2 lads from Cleveleys/Fleetwood pop along but both sold their Pugs a while ago.

its for a car i already own and i am not concerned with when the lifespan of the vehicle as i have control over that lol! i just want to know which dealer supplied the car and where so i have a fuller idea of the cars history to compile a file on my car and also be able to get some original dealer style winscreen stickers and number plates made up for originality thats all :)

I love looking through a cars history.

My 205 has a very thick service history even the orginal sales reciept first owned by a doctor!

He then owned it for around 8 years found a good letter from the dealer apologizing about the wiring issues and that they replaced the whole loom!
