Mi 16 Refresh ?

Recommended Posts

jonny6

Just sourced a Mi16 lump for my 205 8v , i picked up the lump very cheap , was advertised as heard running with no nasty noises or smoke . hopefully this i the case ... however , now i have then engine in question , im not sure in which route to go down with it before i drop it in ..

My first option is to do a full service , oil , cambelt and water pump , carry out the conversion and see how the engine runs in the car .

second option is take head off and chuck a headgasket in , get the head checked , maybe stem seals , guides etc .

Third option is pull the bottom end apart and get new mains , big ends , rings etc , but that means disturbing the liners etc , opening a big old can of worms .

The car is only being being used for fast road use and only gonna be running standard mi power . so not going to be overly stressed .

Im pretty sure most people reading this are thinking option 3 , OPTION 3 , YOU FOOL !! , but im just a little bit worried that option 3 by be a little bit out of my budget ....

Any advice , tips or knowledge comes greatfully received . Or maybe even an option 4 ? thanks guys .

disturbing the liners is no biggie, the seals are cheap, it would be rather silly to strip the whole bottom end down and not do these to be honest, even if you just pop the head off, if a liner moves...

you can just do the liner seals and leave the pistons in the liner, re-use the bearings if they look ok, but you might as well do it properly, or just leave it intact and chuck a belt on.

That said if i start doing the liner seals , would it not make sence to chuck a set of rings in ?

what sort of prices are we talking for a mains and big ends ? not familiar with prices .

thanks .

Depends on the liners; if you (need to) hone them, you need new rings and these are expensive.

If the liners are proper and you leave the pistons in the liners, I think it will be ok.

Conrod bearings are a must to replace, but would do the main bearings as well if you take out the crank.

I would give the conrod bearings priority over the headgasket.

The can of worms are in the (worn) liners, not in the bearings mostly...
