My New Car

Recommended Posts

I sold the 205 track car and my daily Polo was on its last legs, so wanted one car that was comfortable to drive everyday but not totally boring. After countless days searching auto trader for all sorts I ended up with:

Not everyone's cup of tea, but 1 owner and full service history, all the dials and buttons work, heated seats, goes pretty quickly for just 150bhp (remap coming I thinkbiggrin.gif). Seems like a lot of car for the money.

Saab's are great!! Highly considering a TTiD for the next family car once the Leon Cupra TDI is paid off and becomes my daily driver...

You'll find you get them pretty cheap at the moment as they've just gone bust... However all is not bad for the parts as GM have agreed to continue making the parts for them for anyone who has them... Pretty good of a parent company if you ask me!!

Main reason for them going busy was that they were producing cars like the newer 95Aero which were every bit as good as the M5's and such for build and general quality, but at a smaller cost to the buyers...

My mate has an 04 plate 93 Aero, earns far too much money, but refuses to change his car as he can't find anything that he wants over his current Saab!! And he normally munches through cars like I do socks.....

It is good of them, just a shame they refused to let the Chinese buy out Saab so they ended up going bust! ;) Real pity, as there were some quite good looking Saab concepts in the pipeline.

That does like a very tidy 93 though! Another Saab fan here. :)

Saabs are great. I used to tool around in a 9000 Carlsson: fast, comfortable, thirsty!

I love a good Saab!!

My first Saab was my 3rd car at the age of 18... It was a 1998 'R' 900 XS 2.3 Talladega

I could get atleast 20 to the gallon! Wicked car...

If now gone back and own an 07 9-3 Vector sport 1.9TiD with all Mod cons plus the 50MPG and 150 ponies!

...when I'm not in my trusty Peugeot van!

Are you sure that's only a 150bhp model? Assuming it's not just had bits added to it, it appears to be an Aero, which I thought (my memory could be letting me down though) were the 185bhp engine.

I had an 02 9-3 Anniversary, which was basically an SE Turbo dressed up as an Aero (but the late Aero kit like a Viggen), but standard SE Turbo leather seats and a weird 'Teflon' dash instead of the carbon effect yours has. Only 500 made. That was the 185bhp engine but had a BSR PPC box for something like 220bhp. I didn't think it was very quick at first as coming from a 205 Mi16 hooligan it just felt too civilised, but it had great mid-range torque so overtaking was just awesome. Really enjoyed that car, and so much better than my current Alfa 166.

Are you aware of the issues with the bulkhead splitting due to stress from the steering rack?

Yeah it is the low pressure turbo, no boost gauge in the dials, and the engine number matches the 150bhp version.

From what I read the late SE models got a slight revision with some extra bits of trim.

I did check for bulkhead cracks before I bought it and couldn't see any, and it steers straight a high speeds. But I will check it more thoroughly in case.

If it was bought cheap and isn't intended as a long term attachment than providing it'll make it through a few MOTs then I suppose it's no great loss if the bulkhead does eventually go.

There was some slight movement in my pedals when turning the steering, so some bulkhead flex going on, but it still seemed to drive pretty well by my humble standards. The previous owner had fitted some Monroe shocks - supposedly not that great in certain circles - and some unknown lowering springs, but ride quality was still very good, and it changed direction eagerly enough.

I was going to get a 9-5 Aero afterwards, but then got the 166 instead. God I regret that! I do sometimes look to see what 9-3s are for sale locally.

And is everything true about all the crap people say about Peugeots?

It's easy to be a narrow minded car zealot, then one day you grow up and realise that if you pigeon hole things then you are the one missing out.

...and hence why Saabs are such performance bargains!

My mates got a viggen Saab as a daily and it's hilarious - torque steer in the wet is ludicrous though !!

I thought about getting convertible 93 Hirsch Viggen some years back.

Also see someone with another silver 93 in a work car park where I live with the number plate V16GEN
