Removing Underseal & Seam Sealer

Acid dipping can cost a fair few pounds to have done.

How about painting rust bullet, stonechip then top coat, all three will no doubt be almost as good as 2k epoxy if not as good :)

There is a much better product than stonechip on the market. Stonechip can crack, and water can get in behind it.

Have a look at "Raptor" made by UPOL. It can be tinted to the colour of your car, thus saving you money as you don't have to paint over it.

I know of a couple of Motorsport fabricators who are using it on their shells and the stuff is bomb proof.

Any ideas how much they charge for a shell? It can't be cheap!

That stuff looks about the same as stonechip UPOL apart from its very expensive <_<

Another thing with that stuff is it's a 2k paint, so air breathing apperatus would need to be bought and used. I dont have the room for air fed masks etc. Stonechip will have to do for me, although stonechip doesn't crack when painted on flat surface's iv found on old cars, ie 20 years old.

Here is a quick Google of the stuff for sale RAPTOR. I do like it its just the few points i mentioned that puts me off.

I'd hazard a guess of asround 1k for that, with them not stating a guide price suggests its expensive.

I think its in the region of £1500 for the acid dip. Also a further cost for the Electrophoretic coating.

Maybe a daft question but why take off the original underbody protection? Especially if it's so difficult to remove. Started pulling apart and wondering if I should be doing this.

Cause its crap and hides alot of rust and lets water sit behind it ;)

having just stipped part of my rear wheel arch of old stonechip i can definitely confirm that a knotted wire wheel (not the cup type) on an angle grinder is FAR quicker than using a heat gun and scraper!

Theres still lots of hard to get at places, where only elbow grease and scrapers will get! :)

Last car I had dipped and coated came in a touch over £3k.

Sod that then, not worth it with a shell as clean as mine! I've got a good heat gun and am handy with an angle grinder so will have a go at it once the weather gets better.

Got to gwt yourself a wire wheel mate, even if its just the cheap ones that go in your drill million times easier.

After reading most of the above im still a bit unsure about what to do about the seam sealer. Do i strip it completely back to bare metal which will take a few years of my life :(, or just clean it up with autosmart and some elbow grease then paint onto it with a primer like red oxide etc

To do the job properly and make sure the underside is rust free and you can protect it properly you need to remove all the underseal/seam sealer.

You will be surprised how much surface rust is undder the seam sealer/underseal,if you just paint over the top it will look pretty but the rust will eat the metal away under it.
