Going From Carb To Injection

Im getting things prepared for when I eventually get round to upgrading my engine from a TU3S to a TU5J4(?) 106 Gti engine, and it has been mentioned before that I'd need to change the fuel tank, pump and pipes to 205 GTi items. Is this the only way of doing things or can, for example, an engine bay fuel pump be used instead? (facet?)

 

basically I dont fancy replacing the entire petrol tank just for the sake of a pump!

 

any advice?

Changing the tank is a lot easier than buying and setting up a in line set up surely? And cheaper.

 

Also gives you a good chance to clean under there and de-rust :lol:

The facet pumps are designed for carbs and are a few PSI at most, whereas injection systems are normally in the 45-60psi range. Injection also circulates the fuel constantly, which is why you need a return line (which I don't think the non-GTI tanks have?). This is why it's much easier to just fit a GTI tank and pump than to mess around trying to adapt the existing setup.

I'll be honest, its gonna be a steep learning curve! Ive never ran anything with injection and never taken a petrol tank off before! After looking up a few prices for facets, I think you're right on the price side of thing.

 

Regarding swapping tanks, is it just a case of dropping the beam down then unbolting the tank?

 

Think I 'might' be ok on the rust front, as its the rest of the bodywork is clean as a whistle, although I wont hold my breath!

 

problem Is I want to try and do engine swap in stages so its not off the road for a long period and I loose interest, so would it be possible to put a GTi tank in with a pressure regulator whilst the old engine is still in?

You don't need to take the beam off to change the tank.

 

With regards to tackling work you've not done before, go in with your size 10's and give it a good bash, thats what I did and pick stuff up so quick. On the same note only tackle if you have the tools and confidence to do a proper (read - safe) job!

 

If you look at the start of my build thread before the Rallye I had only ever changed some pads and done a oil change, yesturday I took the 6' engine out of my car in 3hrs flat by myself ^_^

cool I think a good flip through the fuel tank section in the mr. haynes book of lies should give me the general jist of that side of things. Im pretty knowledgable on most things base model related but when it comes to the odd bits and peices like this it gets a bit confusing!

 

I'm confident getting the engine in and plumbed in, and got a mate who's gonna give me a hand with the wiring engine wise, so I'm just trying to make sure I've thought of everything in preperation before I get halfway through and realise I've forgotten something massive!
