Turbo Charging A 1.6 Gti

1st of all my appologies to mods for starting this thread here ( please feel free to move it ) but due to being a passenger currently it is the only place i can start a thread :-(

 

ok on to the subject i want to discuss:

 

i have been doing a search on the net generally to see how to get more power from a 1.6 gti engine and from what i have found it seems that peugeot did an amazing job of tuning it to begin with equiping it with a fairly lairy cam , decent induction etc which is probably why most people go down the removing the engine and replacing with a more powerful one from another model of peugeot ie mi16 gti6 and in extreme cases honda vtec power or even mitsubishi evo , but as i want to keep my car as a 1.6 and not mess under the bonnet too much i was looking for parts and tuning to get more power and came across this

has anyone used this company or have any experience of this turbo conversion?

 

it seems forced induction is the way forward to get more power while leaving my engine basically as it is? i always thought that to turbo an engine it would be necessary to lower the compression and uprate various parts and not being an expert mechanic would love to know more from others who have turbo'd a 1.6

 

so far apart from the famed turbo technics conversion and parts ( no longer available sadly ) i havent found any available turbo kits and not many people seem to have made home brewed conversion aside from tom fenton.

 

all input and advice would be appreciated

All the info on how I did mine is in the thread.

 

However I have to ask, what is your end goal?

 

If it is just a bit more power on a budget then there are cheaper ways to go fast than turbocharging your 1600. Yes it may mean a different engine which seems hassle, but it is equally as much hassle, not to mention more expensive, to turbocharge what you have.

 

I don't want to put you off, mine is great fun and will leave the GTI6 "conversion of the moment" for dead, but if you are considering it as an easy way to a bit more grunt then think again.

Only when you get to power figures in excess of 200bhp does it start to become good value for money against a 200bhp NA motor build.

 

There are plenty of folk on here that have either driven or been a passenger in mine to tell you what they thought of it.

My home brew is XU10J2TE exhaust manifold and turbo onto a low compression 1.9 engine with the management from the 2.0T on it. I am not sure how this would work with a smaller capacity engine and the map on the ECU, but it works well for me. Turbos are not cheap power if they are done right. You would probably need to overhaul your 1600 engine to make sure it doesn't go bang. A decent GTI 6 conversion will give you 160+ bhp and cost a lot less

thanks for the advice so far gentlemen. i do realise that a rebuild on my existing engine would be part and parcel of giving it forced induction henry but the whole point of the exercise to me is to keep the capacity as a 1.6 and as stealthy as i can with no noticable body modifications. a real street sleeper but i want reliability as it will be used daily.

 

i am also concerned about making the car excessively thirsty! but obviously with more power come more fuel burned lol!

 

i am guessing setting up on a rolling road it will be possible to have multiple maps for different purposes? like reliabilty economy for daily use ( with more than standard 115bhp ) and another map for track days with full power selectable by plugging in your laptop?

 

am also wondering which electronic mappable ecu system is most reliable/flexible?

 

from what i have read a well known tuner/specialist recommends emerald

What's your budget? £700 can buy you a few plug and play GTI6 set ups from the for sale section on here. They are pretty reliable and economy is directly proportional to RPM! £700 will probably buy you an ECU and a loom and then you have all the turbo stuff plus mapping time etc. S40 DTA seems to be the local favourite now as the Emerald setup is a bit longer in the tooth. The secret is find a local tuner and ask them what they prefer mapping on their rollers. No point turning up with a Weber Alpha when they don't like mapping them.

 

Get yourself across to one of the Peugeot Sport Clubs Lancashire meets as you will find it is very 205 oriented and you can probably get a run in all sorts of Mi'd / GTI6'd / Throttle bodied etc 205s to see the different characteristics

A serious question, what is your budget?

 

If you drive the car about on hi boost a lot of the time then it will be thirsty.

 

Yes you can have different maps, the Emerald K3 or later supports a multiple map switch for the dash which means you can switch between up to 3 maps "on the fly" or in other words flick a switch whilst driving along to select a different map. Coupled with a boost control valve you can easily have a cruise economy map which runs lean and will not make must boost. General duties map on medium boost. Max power map on high boost and slight overfuel to keep things cool. My car uses a DTA E48 which does everything it needs to.

 

If you are serious about it then you are welcome to come and have a go in mine when its back on the road (sorn off the road for winter at the moment).
