306 Gti6 Lh Inner Cv Cup

Recommended Posts

brumster

I've got my new gearbox imminent and I need to sort out the left hand driveshaft inner, as it needs the gti6 inner CV in the gearbox as it's got a shorter splined pin on it.

Before I start a "wanted" thread...

1) Can I buy just the inboard CV cup by itself? So far I've been told I can only buy the whole driveshaft, which I don't really need.

2) Is the item the same on any other car models other than the 306 (widen my options maybe?)

Failing that, I'll started a wanted thread for some second hand jobbies :)

Cheers,

Dan

1, afraid not.

2, yep, most if not all BE gearbox equipped cars from a certain date onwards.

How do I know which is the short-pinn'ed version then? Does anyone know the exact length?

specifically no, but they're different to the 205/309 ones you've got there ;)

It would be nice to see the two cv joints next to one another. I suspect it would be possible to shorten the 205 one and extend the splined area in order to convert the cv cup that fits the rest of the joint.

Presumably we're talking the ~97 swapover date on the 306, are we? Would it be all BE3 derivatives, or just 2 litre petrol lumps for example? I'm guessing Xsara is a good candidate, you see, if I can't find a 306 gti6 'shaft in good order. Mind you I don't suppose the inner cups really wear that much do they; do I need to be worried about not getting a recon'd set? When an inboard cup is recon'd is there a standard way of stamping it to indicate it's been taken out (machined) at all?

Hey there supermod; congrats of the promotion ;)

I did think about this, but didn't fancy the ballache of getting the splines extended. Mind you it's something to fall back on. I was hoping to keep the old inners because if I ever need to put my old, spare gearbox back in (tran-x) I'll need to transplant them onto the shafts.

Mind you in reality I'm thinking along the lines of sequential next - I've got the best part of £4.5k tied up in these two boxes, and that 'aint a far way off clicky box money in the grand scheme of things!!

Cheers ;)

On a vertical slotter with a dividing head it is an easy job to extend the exsiting splines, and then machine off the excess length.

Sorry if I'm being thick but what box and diff is it? Would a diff swap not make more sense?

I have seen a well known company in the Midlands with '1' in it, Cut the std 205 shaft down and grind with a angle grinder by the looks of it the plain shaft so the shaft fitted into the later BE diff so leaving not allot of spline for the diff, was a PITA when I had to swap the shaft when I found this as we had to book it in to change the diff as it should have been done in the first place.

Indeed, I've heard similar stories, but I figured that was the wrong thing to do, and AB confirmed for me too.

Chipstick, I've got someone looking into some for me, I'll give you a shout if I need it - thanks!

I've had a similar problem with these inner cups recently. I have a Xsara VTS gearbox fitted in my 205, when I bought it (second hand) it came with the correct inner cup.

However, I recently bought a pair of the 'completely brand new' 309 shafts that AB Motorsport sell. The (brand new) cup on the end of the new shaft was very slightly different (internally) to the 2nd hand cup I had so they wern't interchangeable :( I spoke to AB Motorsport and Andy was kind enough to supply me a free 2nd hand 205 diff to fit my VTS box.

I did look online about getting the brand new cup machined down and re-splined but i couldnt find anywhere to do it, is it actually possible then Tom? To be honest I'd rather have the cup machined/re-splined than I would swap the diff!

id rather swap the diff if possible, if you ever need a driveshaft quickly away from home for any reason then an off the shelf item will do the trick.

not such a concern though for a competiton car with an expensive diff
