205 Gti-6 Performance.

Recommended Posts

dgp_1_

I have intentionally left any mention of 'versus' out of the title of this thread, because if experience has taught me one thing, it is that the easiest way to get thoroughly lambasted on a car forum is to demand comparison betwixt one make and model and the next. I cannot deny, however, that my intrigue is particularly removed from this most frowned upon practice.

I understand that, in standard form, the performance disparity between an Mi16 and GTi-6 powered 205 is not all that great, especially given interchangeable boxes of cogs and the operator of the machine itself. There are those who argue, and are correct to a point, that the focus of the 205 and the reason that they are still, in equal parts, loved and abused so many years after the very last left the factory doors, has precious little correlation with how much straight-line urge the car delivers. However, owners still furnish their road cars with twice the number of valves for the sake of updating the performance, in this era of headline power figures and an almost intrinsic reliance upon the turbocharger. So my question is, to just what extent does a 2.0 16v blessed with over 160bhp allow a little 205 to mix it with the self proclaimed big-boys of the fast hatch market? My own GTi-6 conversion is pending completion, and before I find a drag strip or deserted dual carriageway to pit my Pug - and with it, my license - against assorted VXRs, WRXs and other 'go-faster' acronyms, I would appreciate some compilation of experience from my fellow enthusiasts! Brand me a chav, troll or child, but I'd just love to know, upon which rung of the grand performance ladder does a valved up GTi proudly place its foot?

Daniel.

oh my days!

Youtube would be pretty good to watch the videos of the lazer green along the strip against a fair few cars, the only one which 'does' him was a lancer evo 7/8 iirc, (which he still left looking a bit silly off the line).

can only comment that a standard, healthy 205 gti6 is on par with a standard healthy 205 mi16.

In before the 'Gearbox, wheels, tyres, speedo, speedo drive, air temp, fuel type, car weight, folded down rear seats' posts.

I don't race on public roads but I do take quite a lot of pleasure in embarrassing men who drive audi tt's there the only cars that really see me use the loud pedal! You can make fairly light work of them in standard form

Broadly speaking, a standard 205 Mi16 / GTi-6 will have around 180hp/ton (excluding driver)

If you ignore traction off the line and speeds over say 70-80 (where aerodynamics and outright power become more important), then it will be broadly comparable in performance of other cars with a similar power-weight ratio. Obviously this is very simplistic and there's a number of variables not taken into account, but it will be in the right ballpark.

0-60 will likely be somewhere around high 6's to mid 7's, quarter mile say 14.5-15.0 and (gearing allowing) top speed somewhere around 135-140

With that little lot, I'm sure you can look at the statistics of various cars online or in the back of Autocar / Evo and work out roughly what it'll be similar to.

A very clear and concise answer.

Please someone lock this topic.

Ive had countless experiences since i converted mine in 2008. On road, track and drag strip. I dont want to go into too much detail really but i will say, they dont feel 'that' fast because its a very linear engine. But when you come up against a car with sports car pedigree and it holds its own, you realise just how quick it is!

Mine does:

0-60 under 6 secs

0-100 around 14 secs

1/4 mile in 14.1

My bum speedo tells me my 205 (Mi16/1.6 gearbox) is not far off my old S1 Elise Sport 160 (160-ish bhp/close ratio box from S1 111s). The shorter gearing of the 205 helps this and its obviously not quite as fast in reality (off the line in particular). But that is quite impressive and feels similarly rapid once rolling from 30 and through the gears to the tonne. The flimsy build aids the sensation of speed of course!

I'm looking forward to terrorising some rep mobiles and assorted sports cars ;)

Power to weight ratio as Anthony says. See what's compatible and you'll roughly be in the right area.

Definitely had a good gander at your YouTube collection over the past few months as I've been gearing up to getting my conversion head on. 30-110 does look very impressive!

Thanks for the replies chaps - I do have an expansive database on Google docs with a whole host of power-to-weight ratios -here but if anything, it serves only to throw up how much traditional figures tell just one side of a big story. I know few here want this kind of discussion 'polluting' the forum space, so I'd sooner have posted it somewhere more easygoing, but I guess I just like to hear people's personal experiences, so long as it isn't "I F****** SMOKE STIs ALL DAY LONG M8 THERR SH**!"

I'm going to close this thread now before it degenerates.

Some decent answers given IMO which hopefully answer the original question.
