I'm with Baz on this one. At the age of your typical 205 GTI and with multiple owners, they're always going to have umpteen possible areas of failure.....and then some.

 

If everyone were to restrict their replies to what are genuine common areas of failure, rather than the things that they've had go wrong in their ownership (of possibly a single 205) then I suspect it would actually be quite a short list. Really it would need long term members to think about the kind of things they've seen crop up on the forum time and again over the years.

 

For example, I'd class rear brake pads falling out as a failure, due to a poor standard design. Likewise gear rods popping off. Speedo cables failing in short time due to drying out from the heat of the exhaust. Standard 8v exhaust manifolds cracking. Poor starting due to worn out wiring and knackered starter motors (surely equally applicable to most cars of the same age!).
