Mi16 Cambelt

Recommended Posts

timb1046

I've got a BX mi16. I need to change the cambelt, I've done a few searches but can't find anything. all that I really need to know is:

Timing holes, are there some? can I wedge them with a suitable drill bit?

is it advisable to change anything else at the same time? water pump? idler, tensioner?

Best place to get the new belt/kit from? (bearing in mind that I don't have bundles of cash sat around)

any hints/tips for when I do the job?

I've done a few before, one on a Vectra, and a few on various Land rovers, but they've got alot of room for manouvering around them.

Any help will very useful,

Tim

The 405 Haynes manual details how to do the job. There are timing holes in the cam pulleys and a slot on the crank. It is straightforward enough although awkward access wise. Buy new bolts for the tensioners, new type are hex head which are much easier to deal with than the shallow torx head that were fitted from the factory. Removing the alternator and the front engine mount bracket from the block makes access better to the front tensioner. There are two tensioners on either side of the belt run from cams to crank, you need to get the tension equal across them both.

Yes, there are some timing holes, you will need something like these: http://www.spoox.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=63_144&products_id=693&osCsid=a460bca0abbedb06f3e637447341953e

Actually the, the exhaust bolts are also fit. (http://images.wrenchead.com/smartpages/partinfo_resize/BSL/BOS254999-1.jpg)

I would change the water pump, and tensioner as well, mostly if you don't know anything about the car's history.

If you remove the upper engine mount and lift the engine a little, you will get enough space to do it.

cool, thanks for all of the quick replies. I presume that the 405/bx mi's are the same? so I can buy a 405 timing kit/water pump which are more redily avalible/advertised.

Be careful though, as 405's were available with both a 1.9 and 2.0 Mi16 engine - the 2.0 belt and tensioner kit is different.

The safest option is to go for a BX 16v as they were only available with the 1.9 Mi16 (XU9J4) engine.

Careful that it's BX 16v though, as the BX GTi was a 1.9 8v (XU9J2) and the belt and tensioner is totally different!

PM sent, thanks for the offer. And the engine is definatly the 16v rather than the eight, I've had it in situ for a good year or so since I got it off Alastairh on here a while ago.

I meant to be careful what the supplier/motorfactor tries to sell you, as they'll often mistakenly offer you a BX GTi rather than BX 16v kit...

That, along with being supplied 405 2.0 Mi16 parts, has happened frequently to people on here.
