I am down in France watching rally Monte Carlo. I go to france a few times a year. I don't think I have ever seen a 205 gti here did the French not like them or is their preference gaz oil.

Hi Jon

A mate and I went a few years ago to speccy on the Monte. We had a great time, one of the best bits was driving the Col de Turini on the day after the rally had finished- highly recommended if you have the time.

Sitting in back of citroen Picasso on an A road is bad enough. Over a col would make me really sick Drove few stages after rally last year a real eye opener these boys have a lot of bottle or don't look over edge.

My folks live in France.

We rarely see GTI's - the government had a scrappage scheme going for years back in the 90's which got rid of a lot of old tin. :(

Funnily enough though there used to be a 205 Griffe Dimma 1km from their house.

I was there for a while. The monte carlo rally is interesting to watch indeed.

You won't see (m)any on the road apart from beaten up base models.

The few good ones are either hidden in garages or come out in trackdays to participate/watch so you will rarely see one on the road.

My sorrento used to get a lot of good attention there, they loved it!

The comment of the french policeman on the the Dover border control the other day "Super état" about my white one made me smile :D

I go to France a lot in the summer months as I have an ongoing job down in good old region 24 (dordogne). There is a real lack of GTi's although if you look carefully there are a few about. Also, every main dealer down there seems to have its own minature scrap yard out the back, a lot of which seem to house a GTi or two. I spotted a few 405 mi's and what I think could be a T16, I will have a further investigation when I head down this year.

Is it not much the same in the UK now. I very rarely see a GTI on the roads up here. Infact the only one i've spotted since Nov is a rather crusty white C-reg phase 1.

As you can see, I live in France. I do see a few GTis, but certainly not as frequently as one does in the UK. CTis are an extremely rare sight...when you do see one, it often turns out to be a Junior/1.4 tarted up with alloys, side trims, etc.

I don't think a French scrappage scheme explains it, there are still hordes of 205s in regular use.

I used to sell alot of 205 parts on ebay and always had French people chasing parts...Saying that, i have only ever seen 1 205 gti in Paris - and theat was 'battle scarred' to say the least.

The numbers of GTis on the roads has dwindled over the last 10 years - we all saw the stats for the UK, and presumably the same levels apply in France. That said , the French club is making quite a noise about 25 years of the 1.9.

How do the prices of GTIs in France compare to those in the UK? Anybody know off-hand?

Hi,

A quick look on the french club "for sale" section shows prices in the range €2200 - 6000. I am in regular contact with a guy in Austria who restores GTi and Ctis and he sells at €6000 + for a full restore.

I haven't managed to find out if he can get OEM "Quartet" yet mind you :)

Used car prices in France are much higher than the UK, my old man lives in France and he puts it down to people keeping hold of cars for a lot longer than people in the UK. I go over a few times a year and have never seen a GTI, every other car seems to be a beat up 205 5dr though  .
