Recommended Posts

recently done the 306 conversion on 45 carbs but there is no rev limiter i have heard that the 306 8v coil pack will work (then i can get a omex rev limited) with the corsa leads put the coil pack on all leads on but refuses to start will fire just wondered if any one had done this or knows of an easier way ? dave

It's not immediately clear, but what engine management are you trying to use?

There is no way that the 306 coilpack will work if you are using a cut down 8v loom as you normally would with a distributor.

If you're using the GTi-6 ECU and loom, the easiest thing would have just been to use the GTi-6 coilpacks.

I've not tried it, but I'm guessing you could bodge it to work on a wasted-spark coilpack by adapting the wiring so that 1+4 and 2+3 are linked - however, I have no idea whether the ECU will take kindly to this or whether you'd need any diodes to prevent backfeeding the ECU. Even if it does work though, it won't gain you anything over using the GTi-6 coilpacks.

Most people use the 306 8v type coil with aftermarket management, which might be where the confusion lies.

I don't know how well GTi-6 management will cope being run as ignition-only, as it will have lost many of the sensors that it relies on for measuring load etc and will probably resort to a safe "limp home" ignition map I suspect.

we was running it with standard gti6 coil packs but with the carb's there is no rev limiter and omex wont work ,

don't realy want to spend a fortune buying omex full ecu and wiring loom set up

do you no of any other ways ?

i was going to put it back to standard loom and run the dizzy of the gti6 engine ? dave

Changing the coil type won't magically add a rev limiter - assuming you can get it to work, it will be just as before.

The only difference is that GTi-6 has one coil per plug, whereas a 306 coil is effectively two coils that each fire two cylinders. Nothing more, nothing less.

8v dizzy will still not give you a rev limiter (8v cuts fuel for rev-limiting) and I suspect the advance curve will be ill-suited for a GTi-6 engine too. You could get it recurved by the likes of H&H and add an aftermarket rev limiter, but by the time you've done that and bought a dizzy fitting adapter too, you're not far off standalone money.

Unfortunately, this is one of those things that if you want to do it properly, you'll need to put your hand in your pocket and buy a standalone ECU. Not cheap once you've factored in all the costs, but doing things properly rarely is, especially when it comes to tuning cars.

As said without half the sensors I'm surprised it works at all, even the std engine doesn't like even the MAP sensor disconnected

Again you cannot join the coil pack wires up from the 4 coil pack type of the RS engine to the non RS type of single coil pack,

Odd why the rev limiter didn't work thou
