Number Plate Spacing

Recommended Posts

chipstick

I have a private plate with 5 characters, opposed to the standard 7

I want to know if it is permissable to shorten the plate by effectively two characters.

The size and spacing of number plate characters is specified in the regulations, as follows:

Each character must be 79mm high and 50mm wide (except the number 1 or the letter I). The width of each character stroke must be 14mm. There must be a space of 11mm between characters within the same group, and character groups must be 33mm apart. For the purposes of measurement, each character (again, excepting the number 1 or the letter I), regardless of its shape, is treated as a rectangular block of dimensions 79mm x 50mm

It doesn't mention the exact width of border that should be left either side. My front plate was cut down by a previous owner to fit in the recess better, and I want to renew them with shorter ones.

If Jaguar/MG/ can 'wear' odd shaped rear BS approved plates, I don't see why you can't retain the correct sized characters and spacing and remove excess plate.

i did this with my private plate and used to work in the trade and the rules were it needs an 11mm border around the whole plate so yep you can cut it right down. you can just about see it in this pic, and no comments about the calibra i was young

I wanted a limo. Was always a couple on eBay, but I was never actually mad enough to commit. Could you drive them on a standard licence? Thought the length/amount they seat may be classed as a minibus or something

yes they can be driven on a car license, they are so comfy even the drivers seat is like a massive lazyboy arm chair. i loved owning and driving them especially at 23 but there is only so much crap you can take from drunk people and the hours arnt exactly socialable. sorry for going off topic

11mm border certainly rings a bell with me. I'm sure they did used to stipulate that within the rules that you found a copied above.
