[engine_work] 2.2 Stroker Conversion And Hta Turbo Conversion

Not sure if this will appeal to the owners of the forum but I thought I would share it with you anyway :)

 

In my short years of driving Ive been lucky enough to own a large amount of cars and also fortunate to play about with quite a few of them. Ive had something like 10 205's and many other performance cars. My fav been my little 205 T16 which I had to sell 6 years ago, as cash towards my 1st home.

 

Since then Ive had what some people would class as better cars however nothing has ever matched the 205 for the sheer sense of brutal performance. I still to this day miss the car pmsl, regret selling it and given a chance would buy it back (if I could find out where it is)

A brand new 3 MPS for a bit of torque steer lol. People said i was becoming a old man so sold it after 3 months lol

Been bog standard felt slower than the MPS lol so a few thousand and 2 yrs later was a 520hp rocket

Decided to go back to another cossie so got this RWD saph with a bit of power. Sounded like a standard car but it wasnt :)

So 2 yrs ago i friend of mine rang to tell me he has found me a great car.

 

In near great condition running 350hp and 320ft/lb it would be a good car for me to use on the weekend. So a couple of trips to Lincon later. This was my new project

Current spec is :- 520hp / 450ft/lb

 

Evo 6 engine with NR rod conversion

Uprated cams, springs and retainers

Piper Pulleys

JMF Manifold

HKS7460R

Thermal Logic Modular Elbow

AMS Intercooler

HKS Pipe Kit

Apexi Exhaust

AMS 950cc injectors

RS rear diff.

Hyrda EMS Mapped by Tracktive Solutions.

 

New spec will be

 

2.2 Stroker engine

K1 crank and rods

Cosworth Pistons

Ported head with cosworth cams, springs and retainers

Ported inlet manifold

AMS turbo kit with FP 3076HTA

Aeromotive uprated fuel pump

New plates for my Twin

Fresh oils for all the drive train box and diffs

Re paint the mesh and clean the intercooler and respray

and my hydra is been mapped by TRL on 20% methanol

Reason for sharing this isnt a bit of willy waving but simply im that over joyed with the car and feel those passionate about their cars will understand the commitment to my 'hobby' to get the car to what i want it to be.....

Tuesday PM / Wednesday was a question of building back up my new engine back up which was built by EngineTunner, Fit a new Twin plate clutch, and a new generation Forced Performance GT3076 HTA Turbo kit

On Thursday the car went to expert evo engine mapper Matt at TRL in Halifax. He worked hard on the car all day Thursday however we got to a point where we were hitting a brick wall with the cars fueling.

 

Either the new aeromotive 340lt fuel pump was faulty or my fuel pressure reg wasnt up to the task. when up the rev range we were struggling to deliver a decent AFR.

 

Running still a conservative set up we saw 578hp and 530ft/lb. So that the car is safe for the next few days the car was set to 560hp which was 70% duty on the turbo suggesting their is a shed load of power still to come and then their is the meth map to try which again we would expect 10% more power

Driving the car home at this 'mild' set up the car is simply sensational to drive. It dosnt feel 4WD... For many different ways but delivering the same grin factor is just like driving my little old 205 :) :) :)

 

 

The car is now sat at TRL so tomorrow they can start getting to the bottom of the fuel related issues and trying to get the car safely to the sort of performance I want which will be in the low to mid 600's with 550+ ft/lb

yes mate. 2.2 strokers are the best set up for an evo engine. 2.3 upwards dont like to rev where as big turbos on the standard 2ltr can be to laggy. The 2.2 is a great middle ground as its still happy to rev to 8500 rpm if the turbo can still make power

Nice selection of cars, but the reason i'm replying is to ask about those blueish/greyish nimrod wheels on the 205 at the top. Did you have them up for sale on ebay a couple of years ago? I won an auction for a set of those and never heard from the seller again. They were pictured on a miami 205 in the auction aswell.

Hi No mate sold them. They were Rota GTR's in 18x8.5 if that helps. Quite common on jap cars that why i changed them :)

One of the things that can put people off big turbos is the lag and driveability (or lack of).

 

It depends what you want for the car. Previous to this work i had what was regarded by many as the fastest stock frame turbo which is the HKS 7460R. Many people are put off by this as its one of the most epensive however spools quicker than a standard item however makes over 500hp.

 

However even though this new set up will be well over 600hp i wouldnt describe it as laggy.... would you?

When I looked at the graph the other day it looked like it didn't really start making boost until about 3k. Is that fair to say? I appreciate it's still got a fair bit of power prior to this though.

 

I'm sure it's fine on track but what about on the road. Unless you are in the first couple of gears surely you'll already be at illegal speeds by the time it's come on boost in 3rd!

Fair comment. However if you look at the RR graph for a bog standard 300-340hp evo the difference at 3000rpm their is about 30hp less on the big turbo. at 3500rpm about 60hp. However come 4000rpm my current set up is making about 80hp more. A standard evo has very little power under 3000rpm so in short their is about a 500rpm worth of extra lag. Obviously its their but you dont notice it due to the way it pulls through the gears so quickly unless you put it in 5th at 30pm

 

At the rr graph i showed at the start Its aprox the following

 

3000rpm 100hp / 180ft/lb

3500rpm 150hp / 220ft/lb

4000rpm 300hp / 390ft/lb

4500rpm 440hp / 500ft/lb

5000rpm 500hp / 520ft/lb

 

Sure you can see come 3500rpm it goes mental. I dont know the answer to this so its a bit of a loaded question but what makes similar power and has significantly less lag? That would be a good base to validate how laggy this set up is? Unless it has massive displacement

Ive got a standard rr graph of an evo 6 to compare with my car. No one has ever described the standard car as laggy. Dosnt feel laggy to drive but im interested to see peoples thoughts

Looking at the above graphs the one with the bigger turbo seems to have even more low down torque than yours.

I have never driven an Evo so I can't tell what they feel like. From a passenger ride with a friend's 8 that has the turbo exhaust port from a 9 and has been remapped, you can tell it likes to rev.

It's all relative, I found my FSTi "laggy" when I first got it compared with my old 205 I was driving before but they are different cars.
