Hill Climb Project 1.6 Gti

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

This is my first post so please be gentle lol

I Have Just purchased a 1.6 GTI to get myself into hill-climbing/sprinting, I going to leave it standard for the time being and race it in the road class but ive got a couple of questions if anyone can help.

The offside sill has a small hole in it and a small rusty section missing to the rear of the sill, ive poked around with a screw driver and it seems pretty solid but should i replace the whole thing or just weld a small section in (how long will it last)? as the car is purely for the track im not too worried about the finish im just going to use a can of spray paint.

The other thing is it has the 1.9 speedline alloys (which i love!) but the owner before has powder coated them black (looks weird to me on a white car) so i was wondering the best way to remove it as the paint seems hard as hell!? ill prob end up spraying them white i think.

Cheers

Hi there

Your first question is yes its ok to weld in a smalll section, i had to do both sides on my rally car and that was 4 years a go and its fine. Second not sure if paint stripper would work on powder coating. I think you would be best posting that one on body work and interior. Welcome to the forum. :D

Lowercase

shotblasting the wheels would be the quickest way to prep them if you have access or know anyone local who can do it at a wallet friendly price.
