Scrap Yard Id

Make sure when you go to sell scrap you have id on you. I took a trailer load of scrap to my local one today and was asked for id even though the guy has known me for years. Its now a requirement by the police apparently!

Good!!

It is nice to see something being done, especially after those pikeys stole the cable for the emergency generator for a hospital. :@

Yes it is good, iv heard they dont want the payments to be made by cash, so there is a trace.

It just so happens i visited my local scarp yard today to get rid of a few bent alloys, i was not asked for any id although i took it with me just in case. It maybe to do with me only weighting in a few alloys though.

I cannot remember if I had to show ID when I took my first lot of scrap to the scrapyard. However every time I go they log the individual quantities against my name, plus time and date. They also have very good cctv, and appear to work closly with the police. I will just point out they are more a scrap metal merchant as opposed to a place cars go to heaven!

One of the few industries which still use payments in cash as the norm, I wonder why!

It ain't like there isn't fake ID cards available, I take it they will be selling a lot to Mickey Mouse!

they was on about making you pay tax on it as some people just do it as a job, lad i know this is all he does, and as for id and all that, half of the scrap metal dealers are dodgy as fook anyhow so they WILL take anything if they know you, as if they would turn away a fiew tonne of copper or anything thats hight weigh in price

Being a heating engineer i now have declare any money made on scrap to the taxman, seems they want every penny we make. It makes me mad as we get taxed so high to start with while heap loads live off the state and we pay for them.

I got a "mate" (more of an a acquaintance now) that was shouting about this a few weeks ago...

Surprising how quick he shut up when I reminded him that he works for his dad and they make sure that he only gets paid enough through the books to be tax free and the rest is cash in hand... Really makes me angry as he gives his x hardly anything in maintenance for his child knowing that csa wont do anything about it due to this...

Anyway, back to the subject... This was all over the news a few weeks ago, I think it's a good thing!! There will always be some places about that bend the rules, or outright disregard them, but it's a good thing in my mind...

Technicality of this is scrap is not waste and should be classed as goods as its not being dumped but sold ! ;)

Might get away driving in a car but if you've got a van or borderline a trailer you might get a tug.

Iirc the fine for carrying waste without a liseance Is huge..

Another thing I've thought of in the past is if you go around collecting scrap to sell you're doing it for profit so need a carriers liseance again.

It's only £150 for three years iirc.

I'm all for it. I'm an electrician and used to work for a firm who did loads of council work. We had a major job to re-feed part of a secondary school in Guildford because pikeys had decided to nick the main armoured cable.

Bearing in mind the cable is as thick as your leg and capable of carrying 600amps they set about cutting through it with a hacksaw

Needless to say once they had hit one of the live conductors the hacksaw blade blew up the fuse went bang and the intruder alarm went off so they legged it. Lucky to be alive I guess! I'm always weighing in off cuts of cable and don't like the idea of paying tax on it, again....
