P.S. Perhaps I've misunderstood something, but is someone in this topic after a TU24 engine?

Yes, I posted it in For Sale last night (I'm not giving it away though ).

But let's not discuss it in here anymore, so we don't clutter your topic.

Great work by the way :).

SKF shaft appeared within 2 days from France and looked like a quality item, (ok it was made in Italy), proper skf bearing on the shaft and fitted nicely, cured the grinding/rumbling. The original drive shafts can't be bad though as it had done 220,000kms and thousands of standing starts and the only thing wrong with it was the loose bearing.

Just waiting for the carb mounts to arrive, have got the misab plates and rubber bushes for the mounting bolts for the webers to replace the original leaky rubber carb mounting blocks.

Three Sisters here we come, shame its list 1A road tyres only.

I had a quick poke about in the engine bay on Thursday and found a crank sensor wire!!!!

The wire has not been connected whilst been in this car so I think ive now got a non Euro Rally engine... :-( or atleast a non euro rallye bottom end...

ive not dug any further yet....

why would that make you think its not the right engine?

gti's also have an unused engine speed sensor in most cases, purely for diagnostic purposes.

The length of the cambelt would give it away, also possibly the engine number or the height of the block, the TU24 sits visibly lower in the car than say a TU3S. I've seen 2 imported euro rallyes with TU24 heads and 1360 bottom ends, not sure how that would work compression wise.

Fingers crossed that it's dry on Sunday for the sprint at Three Sisters, my class has only got a Mini and a 106 Rallye, but I'll still be trying to beat the up to 2 litre cars :)

Well it stayed dry for all my runs. Others weren't so lucky. Got first in class but car understeers like a pig on List 1A tyres, will be glad to get back to the scottish events where they let us use proper tyres (List 1b) which are just soooo much more fun.

Good results! I was given some tickets for Harewood so nipped over there yesterday afternoon, so couldnt get over to watch.

There was a 1400 205 that holds the record there.... It had discs on the back, is this legal?

I thought the competition would be a little bit more laid back than racing, but the guys were going for it!

Really looking forward to getting my car done now!

So Matt - will you not be 'going for it!!'

The 205 would probably be Mike Geen - Spike on here, hope you went over for a chat he's very approachable

Brake's are 'free' so yes you can have discs

Off to our club's annual car show at Dalemain House near Penrith on Sunday with the Rallye. 700+ cars entered, loads of 80's and 90's stuff like a Fiat Strada Abarth etc plus 20 odd hillclimb and sprint cars and a great big grass autotest So I've fitted some semi slicks for some fun on the grass. :D

Well didn't get to Harewood last weekend. Off to Kames circuit near Muirkirk in Scotland for a sprint this Sunday. Six or seven cars in the under 1400cc roadgoing class. Just trying to work out if its Kumho or Avon ZZR A24 compound.... looks like it's going to rain quite a lot.

Its been ages since and update, and very little has happened over the last 2 months. I have recently lost my garage but A friend, Dave Hemingway said I could keep my car in his unit. Before I moved it into his unit I stripped out the engine and took the doors and bonnet and boot off.

I measured the block to see if that gave me any clues on the origin of the engine. You can see the pictures of measurements below

In case you are about to make a boob

If you are intending going in road modified - double check the blue book but I believe you can't strengthen the strut tops, you can't use a pedal box, you can't seam weld and any cage has to be bolt in not weld in - equally no extra strengthening through the bulkhead etc, no rose joints on the suspension unless fitted as standard either

Different if you are going mod-prod

Did you ever find any confirmation on this? More importantly the seam welding as I am the point of doiing it now the car has a permenant home. I think I might do it anyway just to make the car last longer, as tbh I can see me building or running anything else. I love the car especially as it is so rare so want it to be right, safe and last as long as it can.

Just a quick update, I decided to seam weld the 205.

Ive done it my way which is to spot weld drill through the outer layer of the body panel to the inner one(s) and pool weld it all up.
