Which Diff For Off Road Autotesting?

Recommended Posts

Livelee

Calling all diff oracles.

We have sourced a 1.6gti to use for unsealed surface auto tests, looking to fit an LSD but unsure which way to go.

Will be running the shortest ratio steering rack that can be sourced within budget with non power assistance and gravel tyres. The courses are generally a mix of very tight turns back to back and a few straights able to reach 30mph or so.

No long sweeping corners here like on track or rallying!

What do we buy? A Quaife would be less aggressive but is it the right option?

if its on the loose then definitely a tranx or gripper unit, a quaife would be nigh on useless.

Quaife=rubbish and the biggest waste of money ever in competition use, You need a plate Diff, Tran X are good as are Gripper, A medium setting should do but not too difficult to change if needs be

just check before you buy tyres that gravel tyres are ok as the grass autotests we do permit road tyres only !!!

also if you are using a plate diff and manual quick rack on very tight courses hope you like a lot of spinach!!----find on autotests you use the handbrake a lot[306 xsi 16v] + got a quick rack in my tarmac rally car so know what they are like

Tran-x,you will need power steering though even on lightweight setting of the diff especiallyfor what you are using it for!

Dunno what Sarty's was set to but with 190 lbft and manual steering I didn't notice it pulling :)

Run it loose on braking 'cause otherwise it'll skip over undulations, last thing you want with lots of hairpins and handbrake abuse.

I don't find mine too hard work on tarmac, it did alter significantly when I rebuilt it with new plates etc mind you.

205ftlb, 45/45 lightweight setting.

I did a rally in the summer that had loads of special tests on old airfields and through a few farms. I have a quick rack and trans-x without any power steering, the more flowing tests were OK but the twisty ones esp where you had to 360 around a cone were a nightmare. I was on the handbrake alot and even though is was great fun it would have been quicker and easier if I had of had PS.(I also destroyed 2 rear tyres). When I get some time I will be fitting the corsa C electric column.
