Is This Normal For Temp Gauge

does anyone know if this is normal for temp guage,when i turn ignition on the guage goes straight to max then when i start the engine it goes back to minimum the car has been stood for a while and i think there may be a head gasket issue

No, that's not normal at all.

 

Sounds like something is either mis-wired or shorted out to me, as the behaviour you mention would fit with both the oil pressure warning light and the alternator/battery light, both of which would normally light up with ignition and go out when the engine starts.

 

Do both of these lights work correctly?

yes the oil pressure light and batt light both go out when engine starts also the radiator is not getting hot although the engine is
