New Mot Rules For 2012

Recommended Posts

TaffyTim

Ive had a read and I was worried about 2 points before.

My first was that on my honda when i switch the sidelights on I get a dashboard light show me that it is on. If i switch to headlights (dipped) my dash bulb does not light up. If I then switch to full beam I get the full bem dashboard light but when i go back to dipped beam only my sidelight notification comes back on.

I thought this might be a new fail but i cant find anything to confirm this, have i missed a bit?

My second is that My girlfriends mk5 golf has the esp light constantly on as she has the ABS Control Unit/pump problem. From reading the rules I think she is going to have to get this fixed does everyone else agree with my interpretation of the rules?

After a bit of Google'ing the only mention of ECU's was on engines where the OEM ECU has been remapped, as found on the Lynx supercharger kit for the GTi6. Basically manufacturers are kicking up a stink claiming that reprogramming of their ECU's shouldn't be allowed as it violates some software/ownership rights they own, something along those lines. What the debate boils down to is how they actually intend to check the ECU's map compared to the factory default, because it's not exactly practical. There's also talk of how cars which are taxed based on their emissions will fare once they've been modified, producing more power and burning more fuel.

Some European manufacturers have been pushing for that with the EU, but it won't come to anything over here with regards to MOT's, or at least certainly not any time soon. I very much doubt they'd target anything at MOT time, but instead target the companies offering the remaps - and even then I don't see it happening in the foreseeable future.

Yes, as I understand it you're correct - missing dipped beam tale-tale isn't an issue providing the high-beam tale-tale works (as this is what is checked), but the ABS/ESP light on your GF's car being constantly on is a fail I'm afraid.

  •
  • Front passenger door must open from the inside, this was not previously tested

The front passenger door always had to open from the inside it's only the rears that didn't.

The easy fix for your GF would be to remove the ABS warning bulb - that's assuming it's not a serious fault of course!

Having said that does it illuminate before you start the engine...could be a fail?

The new rules generally seem OK though, although I'll finally have to fix my speedo which hasn't been working since before the last MOT!

removing the bulb will indeed result in a FAIL.

I imagine that only applies to modern electronic systems with a proper diagnostic light on the dash rather than the basic system in the 205.

Those cannot be tested, easy way to think is the MOT tester cannot remove anything to test anything

Example, Baby seat in car and the seat belt cannot be tested

Wheel bolt/s Missing, Fit wheel trim or even tape over the hole and they cannot fail it even if they know it's missing

That sums the MOT up

Also i read it that if your power steering reservior is 'see through' and the tester can see the fluid is below minimum then he will fail it,but if the reservior is black then he cannot remove the cap to check the level so i guess would automatically assume its okay!!!

Another point which im sure was picked up in an earlier thread was when power steering racks are used but the power assistance has been removed/not fitted. If the tester feels the steering is too heavy then this could fail.

Its supposed to light up then go out, so from what i understand if it doesnt light up initially then its a fail and if it stays on constantly its a fail. Looks like shes got an expensive year coming up.

On a 205 note I presume fitting 3/5 point harnesses is fine. The rules appear to mention seat belt tensioners but as the 205 doesnt have these Im presuming that adding harnesses is not going to be a fail.

When did these new rules apply, mine failed today on the ball joint dust cover which he said was split. When i looked at it later it was hardley a mark and for good measure a number plate bulb was blown. Also he did not like my rally tryes even though they are road legal and my brakes only just passed. For heavens sake any idot would know a car with comp brake pads need more than the quarter mile i drove there to get up to working temp.Same as the comment about my exchaust emmisions being a tad high. The car has been stood for weeks as its a rally car and again it most likely needed more than a quarter of a mile to clear all the muck. The dickhead liked my motor though and kept reeving it so he could hear the throttle bodies and had a big smile as he did so. £54 or not i shall not be taking my car back there for a retest and have now booked it in with a garage whos owner does rallying as well, The other moron can get stuffed!

Unfortunately a common Mk5 Golf and Mk1 A3 electrical problem that is most likely loom and earthing issue rather than an actual ABS/ESP problem. Some people have even narrowed it down to a faulty Lambda. Don't be talked into new wheels sensors or G-sensor as my parents were (at great expense), they are not the problem but throw codes up.

There is also something about srs lights does not have to work on modified vehicles ie rally cars, define modified car, i have a 1.5 Clio dci with yellow tape on the batt terminal, standard production class in it LOL

Diffrent garage with chaps used to rally and modified cars and it flew through apart from having a new number plate bulb and swopping the track rod ends :D
