Coolant Hose Burst.

Hi Guys,

 

New to the forum, as i have recently purcahsed a 1988 1.6 Gti.

 

Well yesterday was out driving, and suddenly there was a loud pop and loads of steam coming from the engine.

 

Well i guessed that a coolant hose had burst, and i've tracked it down to this one, see photo.

I can't seem to find anywhere on the internet selling these hoses, so where could I find a replacement.

 

The other thing is the hose clips, i'm not sure on how to remove. They are like jubilee clips but without the screw.

ahhh that old one, guessed it would have been :lol:

 

stew at Baker BM does the hoses, google will find his website, the clips you need to cut off with a set of side cutters then replace with suitable worm drive clips, aka jubilee clips.

and i see he does them seperately as well, just looking at the chart with the difference hoses on which one is it that i need?

bottom right corner, the one that looks the same as your burst hose :)

 

your hose would have been original with those clips on, worth checking the rest and probably buying the whole kit from Stew.

yeah his hoses look good, but monies a bit tight after xmas, so the full kit will have to wait for the moment.

The only problem with replacing old hoses with new silcone ones is if the others are weak it can speed up the demise of them imo.

If thats the case, do you know where i might be able to get a rubber one from, until i've got the money for a silicon kit.

the hose clamps are "r-clip" you can get pliers of ebay for them.

Thanks Damien, but i can't post in the wanted section as i haven't got driver status yet.

 

I'll look at those pliers, but I'll probably just snip them off.

I would not consider a second hand hose. It is likely to be more or less as bad as the one that has just burst on you. Also have a good check around the rest of the hoses, the main top hose is also known for going weak over time and then bursting, also check the two main lower hoses and the metal pipe in the drivers side wheelarch.

 

You may or may not be able to get a new replacement from the Peugeot main dealer, I haven't tried in recent years, some parts are now not available from the dealer. Be warned it will be expensive and also probably a few days wait, and as you are in Sheffield you will have to do battle with the most unhelpful parts man ever, at the Handsworth City Motors.

 

I would personally buy the silicone replacement from BBM, I have had a number of hoses and mounts from Stew now, all good quality.

 

The standard hose clips on the 8v engine are not reuseable, cut them off and replace with jubillee clips.

Hoses tend to perish both internally and externally so you cannot tell the condition of them. Having had a hose burst on me in France before, I swapped all mine for new genuine Peugeot ones a few years back. They were cheaper than silicon IIRC and I am sure they will last another 15 to 20 years too!

 

Another recommendation for Stews hoses here from previous experience

if you skint then you could cut the hose and insert a steel/cooper pipe in it with a couple of jubliee clips.

That would be pretty difficult imo for the hose which has split sue to the 90' bend & overall length of the hose (<6" iirc).

 

I think I have one which looks very good somewhere attached the the cts housing.

 

When I get chance I'll have a look & we can all assess its condition from a pic.

Hey thanks for the offer to have a look at a hose.

 

Well i ended up buying the hose from Baker BM.

 

Its all fitted now but it seems like there is an air in the radiator top hose, after refilling the coolant.

 

But the radiator fitted doesn't seem to have a fill hole, so what would be the best way to bleed it?

just drive it, it'll self bleed soon enough :)

 

one trick I do to all mine now is to drill a 3mm hole in the edge of the thermostat just in from the seal, and place this at the top, helps with bleeding massively.

Did you bleed the system through the two bleed points as you filled it back up after changing the hose?

 

If not then running it for a while with the expansion tank cap off is usually enough to bleed the cooling system out properly, they aren't bad for trapping air in them imo.

Yeah bleed it use the 2 bleed points.

 

its just once up to temperature, the top rad hose feels very sponge like its just air under pressure.

 

also the there seems to be very little heat coming from the heater now, where as before it would belt heat out.

How far did you drain the system to replace the hose or did you just replace it without draining any more out than you lost when it burst & refil from there?

I ended up remove the bottom radiator hose to drain the system fully as there wasn't a drain hole on the radiator.

Ok, the top hose shouldn't be rock solid though when its warm imo & will have an amount of squish when you squeeze it.

 

If this is just from running the car stood still, take it for a good 30+ minute run to allow it to self bleed if needed.
