Difference Between Bottom Ends

Recommended Posts

stuart1298

I've got a xu10j2te, with a newly acquired bottom end knock, and ideas If any other bottom ends are the same something like xu10j4r or xu10j4rs, xu10j4 or any thing else?

10J2 is the closest, though 10J4, J4R and RS use the same crank, the block casting is the same though some breathers etc are in different places.

Breathers aren't really an issue. Just thinkings it's gonna be easier to get that block then the old xu10j2te

The fundemental difference on the turbo engine is the pistons, which are heavily dished to reduce compression. Obviously you need the appropriate rods to match the pistons.

If you do end up buying another non-turbo bottom end, then I do have a complete set of four 2.0 8v turbo rods and pistons in good condition that I'd be willing to sell (assuming your existing ones aren't serviceable of course - depending how badly it's knocking, you've potentially ovalled the big end on the rod which effectively renders it scrap)

Before you go too far, it's probably worth seeing how bad the existing engine is - replacement cranks are cheap, so it's really a case of whether the bearing has spun and knackered the rod. If it hasn't, replacement crank and full set of shells, and you've away and you know it's then all good.

10J2 is the closest, though 10J4, J4R and RS use the same crank, the block casting is the same though some breathers etc are in different places.

That's not entirely true - only some have the piston oil spray bars for example

What you need to keep in mind is that a second hand block could do the same thing 15 miles down the road. I got my crank reground and the under sized big ends, mains and thrusts for about £130.

Got it Looked at it today, and it looks like it just big end shells, caught it before any damage occurred. We think it was caused by bore wash, it was big time over fueling and that issue or sorted the other day. So fonna do the shells as there only £30 and see how it goes

Get the crank checked as a matter of course, as I'd be surprised if it's knocking and not damaged the journal, requiring a regrind.

Likely be chucking good money after bad if you don't.

Got one of my mates who's a mechanic to check it all out and has been for 20 years, yea a mechanic, not a fitter. Turns out the turbo's on its last legs, do gonna get the bottom end done, and look at upgrading that, no point keeping it standard if it's screwed :)
