Respraying My 205

What would be a reasonable price for a full respray and removal of a couple tiny dinks? Ive been quoted 1k so far. And IMO thats abit much for alpine white. Or am i just being a tight fisted jew?

That's very cheap for a respray, but what did you ask for? how much of it are you going to do yourself? how bare will it be?

F all myself im terrible with body work. I asked for a respray and dents removed and had a rough estimate of 1k but id rather a good job done if i touch it itll end up being broken

I meant by stripping it down, removal of the interior, trim engine suspension etc.

Are you circumcised? You are indeed a tight bastard

I wouldn't expect any less than £1k unless you happen to know someone in the trade who will do it for mates rates. Since the quality is mainly in the preparation, which is the time consuming part, the cost is going to be heavy on the labour required to prepare it to a good standard. Scrimp on that and get a cheap blow over, and you'll probably just be disappointed. You know what they say, buy cheap buy twice.

Is that plus VAT? Remember that VAT on a grand takes it to £1200.

The reputed best place in Leicester had me come back for two appraisals before sending me a written quote for £3400 to make my Gentry mint.

I then went to a referred 'mate of a mate' who said leave it with him and he would do it over a few months and he wanted £1600.

So £1000 is a bit on the low side in my opinion.

My car is in a body shop now having both wings and the bonnet painted and some rust where the slill meets the quarter pannel in the door shut fixed and painted and I was quoted around the £550 mark,

this is with the body shop doing the prep work on the pannels, the only thing I have done is remove the interior (carpet&seats).

can not wait to get it back.

That is hugely cheap. I paid £300 for the engine bay to be done and a couple rust spots, I did pretty much all the prep and that was mates rates.

I work in a Merc bodyshop and you really are having a bubble thinking a bag of sand for a respray is a pants down quote

For a show winning standard respray (not bare metalled), all dents/rust/creases repaired, fully primed, prepped, painted and a show winning flat and polish job i'd want 5K minimum for a 205.

yeah

but you could also spray it all for 250 quid!!

depends on what needs doing, how good you want it look, what sort of paint, where its being painted, what they do after its painted etc,etc

So what would be a realistic price if it was fully prep'd yourself, so all that's needed is a few coats on a bare shell?

you do need to prep things right otherwise putting paint on is a waste of time,i do jobs on the side at home and i dont charge top money but they are still quality jobs as i have always said if i wouldnt except a job i wouldnt expect a customer to except it heres some pics from home

and this is right from the spray gun very very little polishing as like i say its all in the prep and the better the prep the better and cleaner the job

seat leon was a scrape dent on wheel arch and door £175

focus st was bit of paint flaking off£90

bike tank was colour change £100 and audi tt was scratched and also done the wheels £400 so you can get good cheaper jobs on the side

It's probably a moot point really, as I doubt you'd find anyone willing to do the work on that basis. Because if the finish turned out rubbish as a result of your preparation you could try and pass the blame to the painter, whilst they would blame your preperation. It's fairly similar to people who do engine conversions not being willing to drop in an engine unless it's one they've supplied and know the history of, or that they've rebuilt first, because the aportioning of blame if something goes wrong afterwards all becomes very complicated.

You could possibly agree to rub the paint back as far as possible, but I'm sure your painter would still insist that they do some final prep work.

Yeah I see your point. Suppose if you're going to do it that way you really need a mate to do it, and he can give you pointers on how he wants it prepared.

I might just buy a compressor and give it a go myself, practice makes perfect as they say!

I payed 400quid at mate's rates, for a respray on my old 205, just the outter shell was done, but i was more than happy with the outcome. I think i may have been quite lucky as the garage he worked at has a good reputation.

4 years later and this is what it still looks like.

i wouldnt even want another pro painter prep for me,i would rather do it all my self as if some thing is wrong it is down to me ,so if some semi skilled bloke said to me i will do all the prep and you just paint it i wouldnt do it as you could put the best paint job on it in the world but if its prepped wrong it will stand out a mile

Been a panel beater at various bodyshops including main dealers for over 12 year now and that quote is seriously cheap. But cheap isn't best regarding anything spraying or panel work!

As for doing the prep your self, well if it's not quite up to the job the painter should be checking it all over themselves before painting, it saves time and money by doing most of the prep yourself.

yes aslong as the prep is good,if who ever preps the car has very little experience then he can make it worse and it could cost more if the painter has to put right whats f***ed up,even in primer if its not right itl have to all come off and start again which is more time for the proffesional to put right as he might have done it the easy way in the first place thats called experience,,,,,,if the bodyshop is happy for you to prep it at there place so you can keep asking how to do things then fair enough as they will keep you right because the repairs and stuff have got to be right before the primer goes on

as being in the body and paint trade i can say 1000 pounds is not dear. even for a straight colour . if you take into account removal of glass trim plus cut out and rebond of tailgate glass paint and sundries ect i think i would bite hes hand off. but dont expect a a1 job for that money if you want perfection kiss 2500 good bye
