Speedo Cable - Does It Need Replacing?

Recommended Posts

lapazlane

205 GTi 1.9 S 1.5, been off road for a good while now mad.gif. I remember the speedo needle wavers at some speeds (not really bad, but I like it nice and smooth) - does this indicate need for a new cable or is it something to do with the speedo drive cogs?

If it is the speedo drive, what am I likely to have to so to sort it?

I've got engine/box out at moment for rebuild - is this a good time to change cable if needed, or is it easy enough if I don't have time now and end up leaving it until after it's back on the road?

Most of the time I have come across a wobbly speedo, a new cable does the job.

Thanks Mark.

Any suggestions on the best place to get one (preferably that can be posted to the middle of no where)?

yup, I sourced one for DCC recently, was a Dura branded item though which I have seen from ECP and GSF in the past, worth checking their prices, dealer is just under £40.

Just a word to the wise to be wary of pattern-part cables, as my (limited) experience of them is that they last no time at all before they're shaking worse than the 20 year old OE cable was! Remove and replace with an decent OE cable, and all is fine again... <_<

Oil it before installation may make it last longer.

My current cable caused the speedo waver at some speed too a few years ago, took the dash out and oil it with engine oil - bingo. ^_^

I'll see if I can have a go at oiling it then as IIRC it wasn't really really bad.

I'll also give the main dealer in Northallerton a call tomorrow (tried GSF today and they no longer stock 205 speedo cables).

As the pug ones come in a choice of differnt lengths I always ask for the longest one. Thats my opinion and choice however :)

Never really thought of it that way  On service box it does not say l/h or r/h drive hence they always ask me which one I want when I order one. I was just thinking of the next question after a phone call to a clueless dealer

Peugeot Dealer (Northallerton) says no longer available from main dealers.

Euro Car Parts have them £14.10 incl VAT, £4.99 delivery to Catterick.
