More Fuel Relay Woes!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

thought I'd take my Pug out for post-Christmas thrash, it started on the button and I filled it with Shell's finest.

Didn't get more than a couple of miles when it coughed and died. Ignition amp is OK, so I looked the fuel pump relays again.

It works fine if I bridge them both, but it has to be both. I have replaced them with 2 new ones (12v 40A 4pins), to no avail.

If I bridge the "priming" relay circuit I can hear the pump working and filling the fuel rail. The car will then run till the rail is empty.

If I bridge just the "cranking" circuit it won't work at all. It has to be both circuits bridged to work.

Is the ampage of the relays critical?

Can anyone please suggest anything else to try?

One relay is for the fuel pump and the other is for the injectors (the ECU pulses them by grounding them, they have a permanent live supply).

If it works with the thicker wires bridged but not with new relays the next thing I would check is the wiring and terminals in the relay sockets (particularly the thinner wires) as these are a constant source of problems for Mi16s in my experience.

Thanks for the advice. I have now got it going, but I don't think its a relay issue.

The generic relay from Halfords got very hot just being plugged in so I went back to the "proper" Pug ones.

Then removed, cleaned and WD40d all the plug/coil leads. This worked and it started.

I guess there might be a couple of problems working together here, but I gave it a good thrash and it seems OK.

Till next time...
