What Would You Choose ?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm thinking of buying a complete car and transfer all the things (good things) to my 205.My question is what engine would you choose for 205.First option is 306 s16 1997 168bhp and the second one is 1998 Xantia Activa 2.0 Turbo with 150 bhp.

The car is every day car,I don't like to change my 205 so that's why I'm doing this.

What engine is better for getting reliable car. Less problems and more pleasure. :D :D :D

Is it possible to make Turbo engine with 180-200 bhp only by chip tuning?

Reliability and one of your options is a turbo!

depends what you want as both engines are as reliable as they want to be... cambelts, sensors, consumables... list goes on!

i would try to get a xu10j4rs engine in there are l the bits for the conversion are easily accessible!

Thanks for your reply.

That's not as option

The engine by itself is like the whole Xantia or 2 x s16.

Well you mean better like faster and reliable or you mean that is easier to fit in 205 or something else?

NA all the way!! I would agree that the xu10j4rs is a far more enjoyable engine to use daily than an xu10j2te, plus i found the turbo conversion to be alot more hassle than the gti6 one!

You think that 3.0 V6 is more reliable than s16 ??? Is't too big for car that only weight 900 kg,and what about cornering ?

And how hard is to "insert" in 205 bay?

v6 much more reliable than s16 :)

not a "difficult" conversion, plenty have done it before, wiring is exactly the same, modified subframe and driveshafts req, custom cooling arrangement and some sort of clutch setup, covered lots though.

I have both, the gti6 is going, the turbo is staying. The turbo is more fun to drive, loads quicker (raised boost) puts a smile on your face everytime. the 16v seams sluggish, needs to be drivin hard and constantly keep the revs high to go well. The turbo you plant you foot and go what ever speed or gear.

V6 is good but it does't fit neatly into a 205 engine bay, well all bar 1 I have seen but unless you have access to good tools then I would say no,

The 1.9 TT is great, but the 2.0 turbo even with over 200bhp is rubbish, yes it quick ish but the power band when compared with the TT is more like a Turbo Diesel and the engine bay always looks a mess no matter how neat you try and be

It really depends on your individual preference and driving style, but I'm very much with Miles on this one - I hate the lazy delivery of the 2.0 Turbo engine and its complete refusal to rev much akin to a diesel, whereas a good 16v engine suits the character of a 205 very well and is far more rewarding to drive.

(what might confuse matters is I think what was called an S16 in your part of the world isn't what we here in the UK would call an S16 - over here, a 306 S16 from 1993 to 1996 had the XU10J4 155hp 2.0 Mi16 engine, whereas the 306 GTi-6 from 1997 to 2001 had the XU10J4RS 167hp engine which I'm guessing is what you have)

I must admit the power delivery on my 2.0 turbo is pretty similar to that of my mates (Strictlyderv) 1.9 Turbo Diesel. It's still fun to drive though :)

I think the 2.0 turbo gets unfair press.

A few simple mods and it can be made to make good power and to rev.

A mate of mine has one, he has ported the head and the exhaust manifold, and fitted a GTI cam. It now revs eagerly all the way round, still with good torque from low down. The head and the cam are the two big restrictions in my opinion. All the "accepted norm" of fitting the DKZ cam is also crap IMO, it needs the duration of the GTI cam to allow it to rev.

Well if I understand all off you,you are saying that 1.9 205 engine with turbo is much better option than 2.0 turbo Xantia engine?

And what would you propose to change to be more reliable and to last longer ? Spec ?
