Catcam 4900342

Recommended Posts

Hello, im after a bit of advise.

Basically i had a rush of blood and bought a second hand cam. The cam iv bought is a catcam and part number is 4900342.

Like i said it was a rush of blood and i didnt do any research before i bought it. Iv now had a look on catcams website and this is the imformation i found about this cam.

ENGINE information

INTAKE EXHAUST

clearance [cl] 0.15mm 0.15mm

duration [0.1mm+cl] 287° 287°

duration [1.0mm+cl] 254° 254°

valve lift [cl=0] 12.00mm 12.00mm

cam lift - -

peak angle 106° 106°

timing [1.0mm+cl] 21/53° 53/21°

lift at TDC [cl=0] 3.95mm 3.95mm

It also says the cam is "FOR COMPETITION APPLICATIONS ONLY", Why is it not suitable for road use? Is this just because of poor driveability,mot/emissions or some thing else?

It also says you should change/upgrade valve springs i guess to prevent valve bounce, is this essential with this cam?

Any help would be appreciated.

Now I don't know much about xus. But 4mm lift at TDC seems quite a lot. I wonder what the valve piston clearance would be?

I expect you might need carbs to be able to run that smoothly

Yeah, that what im worried about.

I forgot to say im running r1 carbs, so that should'nt be a problem.

which engine?

Im not very good at this..

Engine is 1.9 8v.

Only modifications are converted to run on r1 bike carbs, cylinder head ported to match intel manifold(was also fully rebuilt at the same time) and a four branch manifold.

I had a very similar cam ( 300°, 12,5mm max lift and 4mm lift at TDC ) in my XU9JAZ (1.9 8V GTI) engine

with 45 weber carbs and no problems with it. Idle was at 900rpm and i also had good power from 3000 up to 7000rpm.

Valve to piston clearance is no problem in the XU9JA(Z).

I used upgraded springs because they are recommended by the cam manufacturer.

Ok thats a relief, at least it was'nt a complete waste of money.

And i think i will upgrade spring to be safe.

Cheers for your help.

Whilst it will run ok on TB's, it will run A LOT better with more compression ratio. I'd take the head off and give it at least a 1mm skim. 12mm is right on the edge of acceptable lift for the standard springs. You should really check for spring bind whilst the heads apart. It's marginal as a "bolt in" upgrade.

Ok, iv got a spare cylinder head kicking about so may aswell change springs and skim the head while its off.

Cheers for all the advice.
