Peugeot Expert G/box- Alternatives?

Recommended Posts

danpug

Hi all. It looks like the box on my 1.9td Expert is on its way out. Ideally i'd like to put a box in with longer ratios, will any of the other boxes from 306's, 406's etc fit ok? It's cable shift if that makes any difference.

check if its a BE or ME/ML box :)

big problem you have is that the 1.9 TD in standard guise doesn't have the guts to use a taller gear, that's why they'll only do 88

Where do i look? It's not easy to see the box as its tucked away. Mines quite punchy! It'd be nice to get a few more mpg out of it.

have a peek underneath, or stick the vin into servicebox.

only way to get more mpg is HDI I'm afraid! or if it has a bosch pump stick SVO in it :)

You need the 406 2.2 Hdi gearbox for your requirement.

0-60 will be never with your 89 bhp but you will have just over 2,000 revs at 70mph in top :)

It is an ML5T gearbox which is standard fitment on DW12 2.2 Hdi engines.

Straight fit? Obviously depends on which engine you have.

That is your first port of call, identifying that.

Edit: On first Google you might well have a DHY XUD9TE engine.

Within my Google results were this same type of topic in a subject thread in every year since 2006 on this forum

The gearbox from an XU 406/Xantia TD saloon/estate would be longer than the van and a straight swap.

The DW12 2.2 Hdi would need some work (internals swap/bellhousing change etc)

If you carry any weight in your van you would increase the risk of burning the clutch out if the ratios are too long. If you want more MPG then potentially fit bigger front tyres.

Those Metrocabs are Peugeot Expert / Scudo based aren't they? They may be geared for more exonomy and less weight so may suit your needs better.

P.S. I have some genuine rear brake shoes for one of these in my garage if you are interested before I stick them on eBay! Drop me a PM.

Thanks henry but i think the rears are fine, now i've said that they'll die! I don't carry any weight really, it was bought to transport bulky items that don't weigh much at all. Would this sort of box be suitable? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-406-2-1-TD-Gear-Box-/170760406565?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27c21d0625 It looks like my clutch arm is a bit different though and i don't think my box has that raised part with a hole in it thats a couple of inches away from where the clutch arm bolts on, its not easy to see my box though as its quite well hidden.

Ok so do you have any idea if it would be a replacement for mine? Or no idea? Maybe its best to just get another expert box.
