Lexan Front Windows

Recommended Posts

Right, I had an idea on how to fix my front windows in that didn't particularly work. Cybernck also had an idea, but something that I cant execute due to the windows not being thermoformed.

So, can you show me your ideas/suggestions/actual fixings of your front lexan/polycarb windows?

Bond them in! I used Sikaflex and a mixture of wedges / clamps to bond mine in place and to the right shape.

I used 5 m4 botls and nuts and drilled the window and door itself, along with making slightly larger holes in the trim to allow the screw head to sit flush.

I may swap the screws/bolts for black versions so they don't notice.

I think it looks quite neat though.

(I do need to try and get the adhesive off the top though, the person who sent them to me taped them together by putting tape actually on the windows!

Dizzee stuff

I fitted some to my sons 205, on the inside of the door at the top ,the door is double skinned. using a 20mm tank cutter i drilled holes through the first skin. Then drilled some small 1/8 holes through the final skin into the bottom of the window and held in place with self tappers. All looks very neat and tidy, if you refitted the door cards you would be unable to see any fixings or holes.

I will be sikaflexing a couple of ally plates underneath.

If they need to come out anytime its just a case of slice through the sealant with a thin knife.

The thing I wanted to avoid was bolting directly into the window to be honest.

The windows forms to the correct shape well enough just placed in the aperture, it is even in there so tight I can barely pull it down but its always nice to have some security. Sikaflex is an idea I guess in the seal but if I didn't have to would prefer it.

Any other suggestions or ideas on what I could do?

Bin the original seals, run a bead of your bonding agent of choice round the inside of the outer door skin, pop the window in to place then fit a tonne of wedges in to keep it there. That's as simple as it needs to be! You don't want to be opening and closing them at all as they'll flap around and / or get scratched, and you don't want to screw into or against the plastic as there's a risk that it will crack.

Like so:

No screws, no brackets, no pissing about!

Oh, and minimum weight! ;)

PPS the cardboard wedges aren't permanent, just to hold everything in place while it dries. Once dried the sikaflex is more than strong enough to hold them in.

Thats great but a real PITA to remove/replace.

My way 10mins to fit/remove. (obviously sealant will have to cure tho)
