Tapered And Flat Wheel Bolts In One?

Recommended Posts

Cloverleaf

I've bought some steel wheels with winter tyres for my gf's 206 GTi HDi (which is fitted with standard Nimrods). I went to swap them tonight and the car has flat wheel bolts and the steels need a trapered bolt. The standard bolts have a washer with a fairly large diameter shank which then goes into a taper before the thread.

I was wondering if these wheel bolts are deisgned to be used with both alloys (as a flat bolt) and steel wheels with a taper? I almost dismissed it, thinking it was an odd idea and a bit naff and that the washer would be just rattling about then I googled it and now I'm not sure.....Can anyone confirm if these bolts are intended to be used in this way?

Thanks,

Joe

Ah Welshpug, strangely enough it was you that came up when I googled it!

Interestingly, I have now located the handbook and as you say the bolts are designed to be used with a steel spare. However, it says that it is essential (in bold!) that you buy special bolts for fitting steel rims and snow tyres! Do you have an explination for this?!!

Thanks

nope

I would guess they are for emergency use only  what is the wording in the handbook?

"Fitting the spare wheel

If your vehicle is equiped with a steel spare wheel, when fitting it, it is normal to notice that the bolt washers do not come into contact with the rim. The spare wheel is secured by the cone-shape of each bolt.

Fitting snow tyres

If you fit snow tyres that are mounted on steel rims onto your vehicle, it is essential that you use special bolts available from your PEUGEOT dealer"

There's no warning about temporary use, or a reduced maximum speed.

I can't think of an engineering explination.

I'm imagine its just the fact they are for temporary use only, the loose washer isn't ideal!

I'd have thought any steel wheel bolt would fit, I've probably got eight here somewhere?

I've got loads of taper seat steel wheel bolts for Pugs if you need some.
