Where did the term old bangers come from, was it old cars back firing ? :unsure:

In the United Kingdom, and most Commonwealth countries, "banger" is the favoured term for old decrepit cars. The origin of the word is unknown, but could refer to the noises old cars sometimes make, such as loud bangs and splutters – a reference to older poorly maintained vehicles' tendency to back-fire.

Banger racing also supports the 'banger' word with their bashed up cars.

The term derives from Countess Cumerland, when she said to her husband that car resembles one of your bangers when it cooked. He had just bent it in half round a tree.
