Can anyone help me with this please - what is it, what's it supposed to do, and is it supposed to be coated with this rubbery gunk?

The second one is either the cooling fan resistor (the fan is connected through it on low speed to make it run slower), or the dim-dip resistor for the lights.

The 1st one looks like part of the coolant level sensor - certainly the wiring connector looks correct as does the colour and approximate dimensions, but I'm guessing that the external casing is missing as it's normally a hard plastic tube with a threaded cap on the end.

Poor picture, but that's what they normally look like.

Seems liks a good guess as I can't think of what else it could be. Never seen on apart though...

Will take a look at the battered radiator next time I'm out - maybe the impact from the accident dislodged the core part from that bit you posted - thanks for that.

Dim-dip resistor wins smile.gif

It was tucked into the area down by one of the headlamps, plus the fan resistor's already accounted for. Ta.
