Straight Swap For My 205 Gti 6

Recommended Posts

mikeygulley

Hey guys,

Just wanted some opinions or I guess reassurance I am doing the right thing!

A friend of mine has a black phase 2 306 gti 6 which is well looked after with 67k on the clock (he is a Peugeot mechanic), he has offered me a straight swap for my 205 gti 6. I am pretty sure I want to do the swap as my 205 is my daily and I have a 6 month old son. I think the 306 makes more sense for me having a young family but I just can't be 100% on the swap.

I'm finding it difficult I think because I converted the car myself and put a lot of money and time into it! I have acquired another 205 gti in the last week off another friend (1600 E reg) that needs some work, its a solid car but just in bits! I keep saying that its ok to swap for the 306 because I have another 205 waiting to be worked on!

I am replacing the big ends on my '6ed 205 this week then doing the swap if I can part with it!

Sorry if this is a bit of a ramble but I'm finding it hard to decide! I do really like the 306!

Mike

I wouldn't personally, but if you're using it for a daily, I expect the 306 would be more comfortable and practical. If it was china blue or diablo i'd probably be tempted but not black haha.

What are you gaining from the 306? Slightly bigger boot, thats about it surely?

Personally I wouldn't, as much as I like 306's I would never swap my 205 for one!

Its up to when it comes down to it though.....

Worth driving the 306 first if you've not driven one before - they handle well enough, but in standard trim they're certainly not as pointy as a 205 and they're much slower than a 205 GTi-6, closer if anything to a good 1.9 8v. Likely be a touch worse on fuel too, given that it's the same engine in a heavier car.

it's not going to be a huge amount more practical for a young child given that it's still only a 3dr, but it will undoubtedly be safer and have more mod cons if that's important (although chances are the aircon will be knackered like almost all 306's!)

At the end of the day, drive it and assess its condition and go from there :)

I did drive the car on Saturday and it felt well planted compared to my 205 and all the mod cons work, it was comfy too.

I'm not a massive speed freak so that doesn't bother me too much but I thought it went well. I'm probably feeling a little pressured and am going to tell him I want a bit more time to think about it. He called me last night saying he had a good insurance quote and wanted to deffo swap!

It's difficult, in one breath the mrs hates the 205 so thought she would of been delighted but in another she says that I need to make sure I want to swap and it would be sad to see it go!!

Looking at your sig you have the 205 and a Van.

Is another scenario that you get rid of the van for say an estate car that can serve two duties, work vehicle and family mobile?

Sounds to me like you know the 306 is the better car for you, but after the work you've put into it you can'r bear to swap it. When all is said and done, it's just a car. Clearly you're an enthusiast else you wouldn't have signed up here, but if you're not "feeling" the benefit of the 205 being the quicker car as you say you're not a speed freak, then frankly you're not losing out. If the 306 is in good shape and you're not going to go from a well known reliable car to a nail, I'd do the swap. You've built the GTi6'd 205, driven it, enjoyed it, now maybe it's time to move on. Exactly the thought process I had when I went from my 205 Mi16 which I'd converted to the bog standard 309 I swapped it for.

The 306 is definitely more practical, and a nice comfy daily car. Plus with having a young kid, if it were me, i'd swap and take the 306. Plus you have the other one to do up. The 306 is a great all rounder, but it's not a car that excites, and imo they are a little dull.

However, if you feel you're unable to get rid of the 205 gti6, why don't you sell the E reg one, and buy a cheap 306 gti6, you can pick them up for peanuts.

I went from a 309 Gti which I converted to Gti6 eng with VTS box to a 306 Rallye and have never looked back ;)

The 306 for a daily car is alot nicer to live with, and the 6 speed box is WAY nicer than the VTS 5 speed :)

Never owned a Gti6,but my Rallye is not much slower than my 309 was, looking at set points on the road the speeds reached are nearly identical ^_^

The Rallye feels faster though, due to the 6 speed gearing,3rd,4th and 5th are very close together and they fly through those gears :D

Well I have sent a text to my mate saying I think I am going to need a bit more time to think about it, he hasn't replied!

Won't be having the 306 now. The owner just called me to say he just drove through a flooded road that he didn't see till the last second and bent a conrod!! He wasn't too pleased!

Maybe it was sign.
