Cwp Choices For 205 Gravel Car?

Recommended Posts

thomasrally

Hey all

I've currently got a 4.8 CWP in my 8v 1600 gravel spec 205 but it's very rare I hit flatout in 5th gear so I'm wondering if I'd benefit from fitting a lower crown wheel and pinion?

My personal feeling is a 5.1cwp could be ideal but I have no idea how much or where I'd buy one of these from?

Thanks Peter the 5.23:1 would probably be perfect as isnt that the same final drive the 106 and 206 cup cars use and they go very well in the woods!?

Couple of questions regarding the above if anyone can please clarify for me :-

1. My current gearbox is half 1.9 205 gti (1st/2nd gear) and half Gti-6 (3rd,4th,5th) with a quaife 4.8cwp, will the above 5.23cwp that Peter's mentioned be a straight fit replacement?

2. What would be my top speeds using the 5.23cwp with the current gearbox ratios at 7000rpm and would it this cwp and gear ratios work well in the woods? I'm running on 14" wheels.

1st - 2.92

2nd - 1.85

3rd - 1.41

4th - 1.15

5th - 0.92

Thanks for any advice :)

Ah, the gti6 hybrid boxes already have quite short 3/4/5ths. With a 4.8 that's a pretty short box! It'll be as straight-fit at a CWP replacement can be, I guess. Not sure whether Baccios pinions run the PTS needle roller bearing on 1st, might be a worthwhile upgrade while you're at it if not.

My calc spreadsheet works on 15" wheels, if I plumb in a 14" wheel size and forest tyres (pretty tall profile I guess - 185/65R14?)....

Your current box tops out at 108mph at 7000rpm.

The proposed Baccio final drive brings that down to 98mph. Gear speeds :

35 55 72 89 108 Hybrid 1.9 'box / PTS 4.8 final drive

32 51 66 81 98 Hybrid 1.9 'box / Baccio 5.23 final drive

Cheers,

Dan

The 206 Cup Cars used a 5:6 CWP in a 6 speed box with a ZF LSD unit
