Lost My Key, How Can I Remove The Ignition Barrel?

Recommended Posts

KRISKARRERA

I've lost my ignition key and don't have a spare. I've got a key for the door lock but the ignition key is different as I had to fit another ignition barrel a while back.

Is there any way to remove the ignition barrel without the key?

Yes, but it's difficult as the key being inserted and put between position I & II releases it, so you'll need to drill the pins that lock it in place out, or break the column so it can be released, neither are ideal or easy! -_-

If you have a spare peugeot key that you don't need you could try hammering it into the ignition, I have known this to work in the past, seems to work best on higher mileage cars with worn barrels! Might be worth trying before faffing about trying to drill the pins out.

Thanks for your advice so far guys. I've just looked through my spare parts and found the bit of wiring that goes to the back of the ignition barrel. I'm thinking maybe I could whip off the trim around the steering column and connect that up to get the car home as it's 20 miles away in Swindon.

Don't forget the steering lock if you hot wire it!

I did this last week, I slit the column with a 1mm blade in the angle grinder then bent the metal back so that the two tangs on the barrel could slip out. I then went to my tool box and found the key in the draw!! Doh!!

Ahh yeah steering lock, forgot about that. I've got 2 battery packs on charge for battle tomorrow. I take it hammering in a screw driver where the key goes won't work?

You could replace the entire column. Its a pretty easy job and gets rid of the hassle of getting the old ignition barrel out.

How did you do it in the end?

Removed trim and the small bolt and then went at the two lugs with a cordless drill. Pulled out the barrel and unbolted it from the switch and them used a screw driver on the switch to start the car. Made me realise how easy it would be to steal.

What you have to remember is when the ignition was designed cordless drills were in their infancy. However compared to a Ford of the same are it looks like Fort Nox, as these could be disabled almost as quick as using the key!
