Anyone Who Knows About Ice?

Recommended Posts

Tom Fenton

As title, are there any ICE knowledgeable folk on here?

Last time I bought a new head unit it came with a tape player, so that should tell you how much I know of the subject.

I've got a speaker thats started farting in my Shogun, probably as a result of AC DC too loud.

The vehicle looks to have had someone that loved it a couple of owners ago, this person I suspect has fitted 4 aftermartket speakers, I suspected they were something half decent as there is also decent gauge wiring to them. I have removed the offending speaker, it is a Cerwin Vega VMAG 502 if that means anything to anyone.

What I'm after is something of equal-ish volume/quality, to buy a pair of. They are 5.25" co ax speakers at the moment.

So really, any recommendations, and any recommended places to buy from.

Thanks

Tom

from google I found that your speakers at the moment are

True bridge mount unified tweeter.(Tweeter & Grille are not removeable)

Frequency Response: 30 Hz - 22 kHz

Impedance: 4 ohms nominal

Peak Power (Maximum): Maximum Music: 150 watts

RMS (Continuous) Power: 50 watts

Sensitivity: 90 dB

Which does not mean much to me either but if I remember correct it is the RMS power which is important as this is what it can handle all the time, not its peak power.

Do you know what power your head unit puts out? eg 4 x 40watts

Once I had found this out I went off to Halfrauds and looked in the sale cabinet for something suitable.

Not sure if this helps much as I am by no means in the know on Ice.

Sure someone who is will be along soon.

Look for something on feebay, normally the cheapest place I tend to fid most bits...

The RMS is as said, what you're really looking for... And deff needs to be greater or equal to your stereo output!!

The peak power 150 to me means nothing at all as its pointless in my eyes unless its being put through an amp on its way to your speaker...

Look out for Pioneer or Vibe. These are my personal choice, normally I go for Pioneer as I have a tendency to play all different types of music, at very high volumes!!

They are clear and crisp, and to date, I've not managed to blow one as yet...

Cerwin Vega are n ot cheap speakers, and have a good reputation. Also the spec of the one listed looks to be good too. However a speaker can be the best in the world and sound crap, as it also very much depends on what sound you feed into it. So unless your car is running something amazing headunit/amp wise you could probable put a low end range but good branded make of speaker into the location and probably not notice much difference. I have used Kenwood, JBL, JVC, Vibe, Dennon and Alpine and been very happy with all of them.

Tom, i've got some unused, boxed, Infinity 5.25" coaxials I could be tempted to sell. they're a few years old, cos I bought them for the back of the 205 but it was off the road for ages and when I eventually got around to trying them I found the built in tweeter sat a bit too proud so the grill wouldn't go back on.

There's a school of thought which I almost believe which says the opposite is true. Most good quality speakers can handle a transient overload without any problem - however, a low power amp driven into clipping produces a lot of high frequency distortion which can melt a tweeter ...

Gents, apologies I missed some of the replies to this.

After a bit of head scratching and searching in the garage I found a pair of Infinity speakers ex my 405Mi16 ex my Xsara VTS.

These fitted a treat and sound good. The headunit is a fairly recent Blaupunkt item, sounds OK now anyway.

Thanks
