Running Rough.

Hello all, new here and here's my first post.

My 1.6 gti was running badley with a nasty flat spot at 4k rpm and hunting at idle. I re-tracked my afm and the flat spot is now at 3k rpm.

I went to a mechanic this morning and he said its not worth playing with the mixture because the small breather hose on the oil filler cap has snapped off. So I sorted that out and its no different. I just gained a headache.

I'm thinking of just getting shot of it. Someone help me please.

The flat spot sounds like an ignition amp fault, try a known good one or you might get away with cleaning up the back of the amp where it bolts to the heatsink and adding some new thermal transfer paste.

Thanks for the reply.

Where would that be? And where can I buy one?

It looks like this:

The position varies, either N/S or O/S inner wing mounted to a metal plate and you might just need new thermal transfer paste on it.

If you get a replacement the best bet is a known good used one, in blue with 'Bosch MTR 01' on it. The new pattern ones are generally so bad they are unusable.

Ok thanks. I'll look for it in the morning. I'll probably test the afm a second time to be sure.

I've checked my afm again and I'm sure it's a good one. I've ordered some thermal paste and I've had a look around ebay for a new amp but there's no Bosch ones. I'll give this one a clean up first anyway but if anyone can tell me where I can get one just in case.

Also, going back to my original post, would a broken breather pipe on my oil cap really cause a bad mixture and very low emission readings? The mechanic said he used to work for Peugeot when the 205's were new so I can only assume he's right?

Back again and things have got worse. Now it won't even start.

I've taken off the amp, cleaned it and added new thermal paste. I've put a spark tester on every plug and all of them have a healthy spark. I've taken the plugs out a couple of time and they are soaked with petrol, mainly on two and three. My Dad thought the coil lead was earthing but I unbolted it and hung it from the bonnet so there was nothing to earth to. Also, on the coil there is a number of wires. One had a scotch connector on it but nothing going to it. I took that off and put electrical tape around it. No improvement. Something I have found is a screw instead of a bolt. Do these act as an earth? Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the amplifier?

I've seen a few threads on here regarding water temperature sensors. I had one go on my old Golf and the symptoms add up. I tested it with a meter and hot and cold water but it seems to be working.

My problem at the start was a flat spot at 4500rpm. Then I re-tracked the AFM and that flat spot came down to 3000rpm. It gives me a top speed of 55/60mph.
