Front End Repair To The Silver Hound

Well guys, following on from this topic (http://forum.205gtid...howtopic=134733) I'm expecting an insurance valuation soon. I'll update the other thread as and when there's info to update.But for now, what I need to find out is, what tools I'm likely to need in order to replace the front panel, lights etc - damage pictured below, sorry for the poor quality pics, will get some hi res ones up once I get my hands on the camera.

So just to recap, is it possible to remove and refit a complete front panel without welding? If so, what tools will I need?

 

Got a basic 38pc 3/8" socket set and a few other general tools, plusgas, copperslip, degreaser - any suggestions of anything a bit more specialist that I'll need?

that doesnt look to bad at all however you do need to strip off all the bent bits plus the washer bottle battery and alarm siren to asses the inner wings, the front panel is spot welded on so you will need a welder (or spot welder) to sort that.

Afraid not. Your best bet if you get the valance, bumper, lights, grill rad, fan etc etc off and have a better look.

The front panel is pretty flexible , well mine was , so i bent it back into shape ..

As said take the bumpers off and see how much damage there is to the metalwork, from the pics it looks like you may actually get away with a new bumper and mounting brackets, all of which can be replaced with normal tools. If you have creases on the inner wings though things start to get a bit more complex.

 

Take everything off the front and see what the damage is first.

If the extent of the damage to the shell, is that slight ripple where the wing bolts to the car then you could just get the hammer out

 

All you need is a socket set, some spanner and possibly hammer and hacksaw if that bumpers never been off. From the photos it looks as though the valance is ok? You may get away with a bumper, slam panel, o/s head light and grill. I would have been tempted to not go through the insurance on that one.

From the kink in the wing it has pushed the headlamp panels back. I think it will want a tug on both headlamp panels to pull them straight at the very least. Does the bonnet still line up properly with the wings?

I think that looks very cosmetic to me. It seems pretty square on which has dissipated the energy across the front. the front valance, fog lights and grill seem recoverable. It has an original bumper on it so that has protected you (compared to some of the flimsy aftermarket ones). Hopefully your bumper mounts have deformed and not taken the shock further back into the front panel. I think a lot of that can be realigned with a tape measure, a block of wood, a rubber mallet and a bottle jack.

 

The bonnet should not be too bad to get a second hand one as a lot of non GTIs were in silver and platinum silver has run throughout the range (even onto 306's)

Thanks for the inputs guys, got most of the front end stripped off, just need to get the headlights/indicators off next, will do this and then upload some decent quality pics of what I find.

 

Incidentally, the radiator's had it, the driving lamps however are in no worse condition that they were. The slam panel's gone, the fan shround looks OK, the fan grille (RH as you face it) is OK, then fan itself seems OK - turns, has no broken or even bent blades. The front panel - rusted in places, bent, maybe salvagable but will probably go for a complete new one. PS oil filter dented by radiator. Bumper brackets - OS is fine just rusty. NS gone. Valance repairable.

 

Like I say, will update with better pics and address some of the points raised by the Hammer Specialists once I can see the front panel properly.

With my cheeky head on, are you replacing the bonnet? If so, do you fancy selling me the sprung bit that goes into the release mechanism on the slam panel (hope that makes sense - not sure what its real name is..) ?

Yep, it drops back in to place, although it is getting replaced. If I can find a complete front panel I'll go for that rather than the individual sections as they seems to be sold.

 

Looks like the radiator cross member can be tricky to get, although there is one on ebay. Might be able to get something fabricated if I get stuck, presumably.
