dav1 7 Posted December 5, 2011 Wat is best to use as a quick steering rack? I hear you can use 205 power steering rack? Or maybe a citoren xsara vts rack? Any pointers would be grateful. Thanks.

Paul_13 212 1 Cars Posted December 7, 2011 Yea. It's a 6001 bearing from memory

Paul_13 212 1 Cars Posted December 7, 2011 The quaife quick rack comes as just the rack and pinion, you have to build it yourself into the existing casing and doesn't come with a bearing

Jarrus 3 Posted December 8, 2011 Interresting this.... I got a 205 TD with PAS and a 306 TD also with PAS and I do notice that the 306's steering is slower than the 205's by quite a lot.... Even though the steering feel is good, it's just too damn slow, might have to fit a 205 rack then......
welshpug 1,646 Posted December 8, 2011 iirc the 306 pas rack is more akin to the number of turns a standard 205 rack has, always a little eye opener when I drive my brothers Dturbo after driving my zx for a while, more than an extra turn lock to lock
Jarrus 3 Posted December 8, 2011 So the gti power steering rack is quicker than a ghetto spec power steering rack? I do notice that there is less turns
welshpug 1,646 Posted December 8, 2011 not 100% on the number of turns lock to lock but they do have a different part number and some do have different nmber of teeth on the pinion. 4048 C5 NFP REP NOIR 8DTS/PIGNON - RIGHT HAND DRIVE EXCEPT XU5M EXCEPT XUD7T EXCEPT GTI EXCEPT CTI DEFLECTOR BLACK 4048 C7 NFP REP=ORANGE 8DTS/PIGN - INJECTION AND XU5M AND RIGHT HAND DRIVE COWL ORANGE 4048 C9 NFP REP BLANC 7DTS/PIGNO - RIGHT HAND DRIVE AND GTI 4048 K4 NFP REP BLEU 7DTS/PIGNON - CTI AND RIGHT HAND DRIVE - RIGHT HAND DRIVE AND DIESEL AND XUD7T
matt.f 16 Posted December 8, 2011 Pretty sure from reading previous threads that even quaife struggle to get bearings. quaife is 2.7 manual 205 3.5(ish)iirc not sure on 205 pas
Jarrus 3 Posted December 8, 2011 Next time I'm out in the motor then I'll check what mine is lock to lock, I would assume that this is mine according to what welshpug has put: 4048 K4 NFP REP BLEU 7DTS/PIGNON - CTI AND RIGHT HAND DRIVE - RIGHT HAND DRIVE AND DIESEL AND XUD7T
swordfish210 20 Posted December 9, 2011 Going back to the Quaife racks (again) The spline drive pinion is easy to find a bearing for, it's a 6002. The square drive pinion however doesn't seem to fit any bearing ever designed and i managed to get Quaife to admit that they never designed it to fit anything. I found the easiest thing to do was find an engineering firm with a cylindrical grinder (a lathe won't do unless you have diamond tip tooling as the pinion is hardened steel) and get them to grind it down so a 6003 bearing will fit on it. Easiest solution to an irritating piece of design retardation.
