3 And 5 Door Wheelbase's

Recommended Posts

dave205

Are the floor pans on a 3 door and 5 door the same, making the wheelbase the same length, with the b-pillars being further forward to compensate for the extra doors?

Yer exactly the same length, a lot smaller front doors and as you say B pillars further forward.

To further this slightly, Do they use the same roof skin?

to further it slightly more, is there a difference in overall weight or corner weight?

Surely the 5 door would be heavier because of the doors and all the extra gubbins to go with them?

I dont think so to be honest, driving a 5door feels lighter to me, and the doors on the 5 door weigh literally nothing compared to the 3door. And as for gubbins, theres nothing really except windows

5 door is definitely heavier! Think of all the metal you need to make a door, then to make a door aperture (needs to be stiff!) then the locks, extra glass, etc etc..

Very little amount of extra glass

the locking system weighs about £50 worth of the finest columbian

extra metal will be minimal as its in place of metal not thin air

I'm not convinced, anybody got official figures?

You still have the same amount of metal on the external skin, but you also have internal skins for the door, skins for the door aperture, thicker panels for the hinges and lock, then window winder mechanism, then on top of that all the door locks, handles etc.. it all adds up!

Hmm I see your point, I'm not sure whether its perhaps the corner weights, but 5 doors seem to feel lighter to drive I think

Probably the chassis flexing more.

I jack my 5door up on the front and both the doors on the airbourne side get nearly jammed shut from the flex.

I want a sleeper 5 door.

Surely 5 doors are stiffer because of the rear pillar and narrower apature.
