Diagnostic Light On

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm wanting to pick your knowledgeable brains please!!!

My 205 auto 1.6i (xu5) has the diagnostic light on, as well as misfiring when either on tickover or going through any gear. This light comes on whenever it wants to...but will also go off at any point.

Before it's mot last thursday, when I revved it,there was a shed load of black smoke, and was using loads of petrol.

My mechanic fitted a lambda sensor (that I supplied) and the car passed its mot, emissions etc,no problem.

The next day,it wouldn't tick over properly,(when I needed to scrape ice off the windscreen) and would just stall...though the run to work (via petrol station!!) still resulting with it misfiring.

I cleaned the plugs,(that were black and very sooted up),and it ran a bit better, but there was a small amount of black smoke on tickover, later,on a 15 mile run,it gradually got to how it was before.

Today I cleaned/looked at the plugs again...and they are just as bad as they were yesterday...after a 20 minute run,and have put in a new air filter, but have not had time to go out in it yet.

There's also a noticeable drop on the fuel gauge...after just 25 miles!!!!!!

So any suggestions/advice very welcome!!!

Thanks.

at a guess it would be lambda sensor as when mine was dying it come up, put a new one in and it went off, then changed my exhaust with my old lambda in and it come back on again

I've also posted this reply on pscuk forum but my mums 205 1.6i used to suffer a simlar problem which was caused by a duff lambda.

I tested it in accordance with autodata & it failed so i replaved it with an NGK lambda.

Did your mate replace your lambda with a universal one or a decent NGK one which had the correct plugs & was a straight swap?

I was advised against using universal lambdas & found the ngk one for the same price as a universal one.

Since swapping that its been fine for the last few years.

Cheers folks for all your replies,

The lambda sensor that has been replaced is a brand new bosch 4 wire with 2 plugs....having read peoples experiences with universal sensors,I thought I'd stay well clear of them!!!

So it looks like, its a engine temp sensor, that I'll try next...and hopefully, the end of the problems (though,we are talking 205's here!!!)

Is this a dealer only part, or is there a particular brand to buy/avoid.

Thanks all for taking the time to help.
