Fair play for your honesty, some people would be shouting 'claim' left, right and center

First of all mate really sorry to hear that your P&J got damaged but at least nobody was hurt and the GTi will live to fight another day.

Sounds like it's all in hand now, but I wanted to post as I've plenty of experience sadly: 2 non-fault accidents resulting in write off back in the days when I could only afford third party fire and theft cover.

If you're adamant it was the other party's fault you can try to claim for everything off their insurers. Maybe your insurer will do that for you? I got full payouts without loss of NCB and without having comprehensive cover - that's what the other driver's third party cover is for.

It does sound like you're happy with the arrangement you've made with the insurer but I just wanted to point out that possible route :)

Thanks for the info - I am actually in the process of trying to claim the £200 excess back off the third party - but I'm not doing it via my insurer. I bought my Motor Legal Insurance policy seperately to my fully comp policy. Normally it's a £25-35 add on but I found one for £12 from Best Advice. I'll see what happens.
