At What Point Do Think Why ?

Recommended Posts

Hello folks ..

At what point do you think buying a 205 gti is worth the money , or what im trying to say is it worth buying a total shed ( project ) or buying one on the road ?

reason for this question is i looked at one on monday ( its on ebay at the mo, white £525 at the mo ) its near me so didnt mind nipping for a look , spoke to the guy first , he said the beam was ok just rust above the rear windows . which i could see in the pics

I got there and jesus rust was everwhere cills boot floor inner wings etc and that is before you stripped it down ;O) beam was well ceased up 78000 instead of 70000 as stated , seats worn etc been stood 9 years or so, doors ceased shut , couldnt tell you if the engine ran .

The guy selling it told me, folk who have been out to look at it said it was the best gti they have seen , i said it was the worst ha ha

I can understand folk wanting a low milage original (dont know if 78k is low tho ) car but how much work is it actually worth or is that just the joy of cars ?

I would only buy a rust free car, the rest is easy with a solid base.

I've always said on cars this old that you buy on condition and not mileage.

That car sounds like a complete basket case frankly, and I really can't see why you'd touch it when there's so much better out there for barely any more money. Remember that the seller is trying to sell you the car, and thus to take anything said with a distinct pinch of salt.

Lemon.

To have rust like that above the windows can only mean very bad rust in areas you wouldn't know about until you start prodding. You could do better.

Anyone who bids on a car without seeing it is idiotic imo,you could be buying anything.

That's a rather stupid sweeping statement.

Actually, it can work out very well if you do it sensibly.

I've bought numerous cars unseen on eBay having first asked any questions to clarify points - after winning (for normally considerably less than they normally go for) I'll go down to collect, properly inspecting and test driving the car first. If it's all good and as described then I'll pay the money and drive off laughing, and if it's not as described, I'll either re-negotiate a fair price or just walk away having lost nothing but the petrol / train fare that it would have cost to go and have a look in the first place.

eBay Motors bids are non-binding anyway, and even if they were, if the item is not as described then you can walk.

Buying from a conventional auction house is a FAR more risky prospect considering that you have very little chance to inspect the car and are committed to buying with very little comeback or chance to back out unless it's a complete lemon with catastrophic issues.

Afternoon,

I read that adverts days ago and had a good laugh at the description in relation to the photographs. To have gaping holes caused by rust in areas that are clearly visible to the naked eye shouts........NEGLECTED; DO NOT TOUCH.

When I was looking for my GTI, the most important thing for me was the provenance associated with it. Finally found one that was not a ridiculous amount of money and needed some TLC to bring it back to former glory.

Have to disagree...my red GTi shell is totally rust free...except for above the windows, inner wings, sill bottoms, boot floor, front panel, and under rear seats is perfect.
