Knock Knock Knock In The Morning

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have '6ed 205 and now the weather is getting a bit colder its started knocking/tapping first thing in the morning. I am using 10 - 40 oil. The noise stops after 10 - 15 seconds and it just humms like it normally does.

My question is, would it be a good idea to put an additive in the motor? My old man mentioned an SCP? (could be wrong) product that coats everything to make the oil stick to it?? He says he heard of some one putting this stuff in a motor bike getting it up to temp then draining the oil out and riding for about 4 miles at 9000rpm before it blew up, I'm not so sure myself :/ He is a bit mad :D

Anyway any suggestions would be good.

Mike :)

What oil filter are you using? The gen Peugeot one has a non drain valve in it to keep oil in the head.

My old 405 Mi would tap like fcuk in the morning with a spurious filter, a gen one and it would be quiet.

Maybe knocking is an extreme description! It definitely has a tap until I'm guessing the oil is up, because it quietens right down. Also when we get rain and the weather is more mild it doesn't do it.

I use the standard 8V oil filter (can't remember the brand but will look). I change the oil and filter every 4k ish. What is the part number for a genuine oil filter??

I really don't think it needs a rebuild!!

The noise stops after 10 - 15 seconds

I say this but if I give a bit of throttle it stops sooner.

They are hydraulic on a GTI6 buddy, you can't adjust them.

check the oil level, and if it is due an oil change change it.

If it has just had an oil change, perhaps the grade is different and is of lower viscosity when cold.

hydraulic tappets don't like old s*it oil.. i forget why, something to do with it loosing sheer strength as it gets bashed about, but they tend to tap more when it's due a change.

hope this helps.

Hey guys,

So after a bit of digging around and chatting to to another forum member. I have bought a gen filter and ordered up a set of big ends! I hadn't realized this could be an early sign of big ends failing and then noticed that when cold the noise did not come from the top of the engine!

Luckily I noticed it as soon as it started and that was less than a week ago.

Cheers for your info guys.

Mike :)

be sure to mic the crank and plastigauge the new bearings, as if it has been knocking you'll be very lucky if standard bearings go in within tolerance.

Hi Mike

Might be an idea to invest in some ARP conrod bolts to be on the safe side, I know how you like to give that motor some beans wink.gif
