How Do You Fix A Fading Clock?

I am sure I have seen a thread before where someone dismantled their clock and got it to work. Mine works fine but keeps fading out and then resetting its time. Is this an easy fix?

 

Here is an old pic of it in action when it worked fine! (Pop quiz: What is unusual in the pic apart from the obvious?)

Dry solder usually. I've had one in the past though that i dismantled and cleaned and it worked fine after that.

Why not just buy another? I replaced the one in the rallye for about £1 off ebay ^_^

Is it just a clean on the contacts that is needed or does anything need resoldering?

The hazard switch is replaced with a blanking switch?

The hazard is till there but the CTI doesn't really need the rear demist so they remove the switch for weight saving performance gains!

Just look at the solder on the circuit board and see it it's all still connected properly, if it is just try cleaning all the dust out/off of it.

 

I thought the green clock was the obvious thing :(

cool, i know a 405 one wont fit and is orange, have the same problem with mine and i think it must be betweem the pins for the socket and the board

I seem to remember I got my clock going properly by undoing the tiny screws holding the clock together, separating the "screen" from the pcb, & cleaning all the contacts. Unfortunately it reverted to its old tricks (fading out once engine/gearbox thoroughly warm), so I swapped it for another one, still OK now. But easy to do, so worth a try!

It does seem temperature related come to think of it and we know how warm some of the plastics can get with the heater on.. It's just a pity it is such a time consuming ballache to get at for a little job

mine did this and i know why

 

i took all apart and cleaned put it back together and still done the same fade away

 

then looked at the plug and noticed that the female spade connectors were a loose fit so i got a small screw driver and made sure they were all closed up so that when slid in to clock was a tight fit

 

and hey presto working clock

 

the spade connectors get loose over time probably thru heat expansion

I cut the plug off to it and replaced it with a row of spade connectors. They fit in the clock but AFAIR i had to stip the insulation off them.

This repair isnt one for the purists, but when you've cleaned it up 12 times only for it to last a week, you tend to get a bit eager with the wire clippers.

How odd, this is exactly how it was done on the GTI in the scrap yard I had the loom from for my rallye :wacko:

I have jsut learned to live without mine when its Dark. It works but has not light!

 

Annoying but never known the problem. Backlight?
