Not really.

Best thing to do is to remove the diff cover and check the crownwheel as this will give the final drive ratio - should be 4.4 for an Mi16 box, and it should have a normal 205 style push type clutch arm fitted if it's a 1.9 Mi16 / BX 16v sourced box.

yup there should be some numbers or on older boxes a sticker, what clutch arm and selector arms does it have?

the only surefire way to confirm it is what it's meant to be before fitting it is to strip it apart, or take a gamble and pray the gear speeds/1000 rpm match.

Its got the normall fork that goes into the bellhousing with another arm above it if you like where the cable goes through.

The guy i bought the car of told me it was an mi box, he also said the car was solid and if you've seen my build thread you can see why im double checking !!

to the untrained eye the 2.0 mi16 clutch arm looks the same, however it isn't...

Assuming that you mean the gearbox that's fitted to your car in the first picture in the build thread, that's defo not an Mi gearbox

This gearbox?

That's got a BE1 style clutch arm on it, and all 1.9 Mi16 gearboxes (even BE1 models) had the later BE3 clutch arm.

You cannot always blame the seller as I bet they don;t know either, I see this time and time again, but mainly GTi's having Derv box's from good old scrap yards

Seeing as you've got it all out it may still be worth checking the final drive to see if ones been fitted? Not like it's going to be a hassle seeing as your rebuilding the car from the ground up anyway?

so how much of a difference is there between an mi box and a gti box? is it just a case of changing the final drive? or is it different through all the gears?

Take the diff cover off and check the final drive.

If it's a 1.6 'box (4.06 FD) then that will work well with the Mi engine, but if it's a 1.9 (3.69 FD) then in my opinion it's too long geared and makes the engine feel distinctly flat. If it's something like a diesel (3.4? FD) then it'll be horrible.

In terms of comparisons between an Mi and the two GTi boxes, if you do a search you'll find the ratios and an excel spreadsheet that calculates just about everything that you could want to know, but in simplistic terms, both the GTi boxes are close ratio but different final drives (1.6 being shorter) and the Mi box has a short 1/2/3 and a longer 4/5 giving a compromise between acceleration in lower gears and lower cruising rpm.
